I had a good time.

It isn’t perfect and there are some definite misses in some ways but it was still pretty fun.

I love production value and this was top notch. Some things were scaled down a bit. I saw it in 3D and I thought the mix of cgi 3D actually worked quite well.

I enjoyed the cast. I of course loved jasmine. Alladin was really good too I though. He’s obviously a bit green but he’s charismatic enough. Will Smith is fine. Some interesting side characters have some nuances (head guard).

Jafar.... is different. Like and I’ll get to it below but there are aspects of him that make a lot of sense story wise. But he’s just so much of a worm from the get go and over the top evil that really grates.

The story is the same. Some people can’t get over that. But there are a lot of nuances and different angles to the story. Nothing big but lots of small touches that did make you consider the story in a new way. Hard to describe but it seems a little bit like alladin and jasmine are playing different versions of their original versions.

Anyway, I’m sure people will hate on it. I think it’s fine.

I will say....for a movie that should have been aimed at children, there was not a single child in the theater. I’d say everyone was pretty much late 20s early 30s. That may be the theater but I did notice it

Well.... thanks! I hope you agree. I do think people will get out of this movie what they want. If you want to enjoy it, I think people will.

Overall, I thought it was fine. Not great, but not as terrible as I initially thought it would be. The best thing I can say about Will Smith is that he didn’t ruin the movie. As a musical, it delivered. The two leads sang well, although “A Whole New World” felt flat to me. I’m not a fan of the way it was rescored to sound more “pop” than like a Broadway show tune. Also, I felt they missed the mark with Jafar. I can appreciate how they tried to make him more of a political villain than just an over the top evil sorcerer. On a scale of 1-10, Id probably rate it about a six.

Musically their version of A Whole New World was fine. It was just a little two short and that magic carpet ride was anything but magical.

They sang the entire song just as in the original animated version, but I agree that it seemed shorter somehow. The visuals during the carpet flight were lackluster for sure.

That's actually a terrible review for a thoroughly enjoyed film

Certainly convinces me to take a hard pass. Thanks.

What happens to the genie at the end is far more believable and fits better than the original.

Have you seen the new one? No? Then shut the frick up because you have no clue what you're talking about. You just have some little kid nostalgia thing going on.

Here's some irony.

The actress that plays Dalia is Middle Eastern.

The actress that plays Jasmine is British.

true

Disney is remaking all the animated movies it seems, and I don’t have a problem with it. My daughter liked the Cinderella remake. Lion King looks cool. I’m sure Aladdin is fine. There’s nothing sacred about these movies.
