Dan Simmons "Children of the Night." It's a vampire book.

L.A., I heard somebody at work talking about this book yesterday. It sounds good. I have Straub's Ghost Story sitting next to me as I speak. I will probably start that tomorrow or Thursday. I will also need to read a sci-fi book in the next couple weeks (I am a 7th grade ELA teacher, and we have a sci-fi unit fast approaching...). I don't know how much more time I will have to read the scary stuff before Halloween comes. I am a very by-the-book holiday observer. Halloween stuff ends on Nov. 1. Christmas time begins on Thanksgiving night. You know the southern drill!

LOVE Clive Barker. Just read damnation game and loved it. My favorite book of his, though, is everville

I was looking through this thread for Damnation Game. it's been a while, but that book was great. Everville I read, but it was a lonnnng time ago. As I did Great and Secret Show.

I don't think you can go wrong with CB

Always liked Ghost Story, just an eerie book that has moments of dread.

Right now I'm reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. Good Book, new Scorcese movie. Really want to know what the hell is going on on this island.

Also, agree with the Richard Matheson and Shirley Jackson suggestions. Def. read The Legend of Hell House by Matheson along with his short stories and The Haunting of Hill House by Jackson. Her short stories are great as well.

Think I have to do that. I'm not sure where this book is going, just know I'm loving it.

Clive Barker's "Books of Blood," "The Damnation Game," "Mister B. Gone," and Stephen King's "IT" are all pretty good. I love Lovecraft, but those are primarily going to be short stories. Pick up a collection if you can, they won't dissapoint.
