I hope Michael Mann gets royalty checks for the Grand Theft Auto franchise

Vice City is a “homage” to Miami Vice, and GTA V is literally Heat the video game. Beat for beat copy of the bank truck heist, and bank heist. Complete with the exact same attire as De Niro & Kilmer. Not to mention his influence is on literally every single GTA game from GTA 3 onwards. I hope the dude gets a big fat royalty check because this one of the biggest video game franchises of all time and it’s essentially his 80s and 90s work repackaged.
Edit: also forgot that longtime Mann collaborators Tangerine Dream did the score for GTA V

I think your off
GTA 3 is more a retelling of Payback.
Gta San Andreas is boys in the hood
Vice city is more closely associated with Scarface.

Someone never heard of satire

I wouldn’t say satire. More like homage. I think the games I listed are a love letter to Mann’s work, whereas the biting satire is on stuff contemporary to whatever time period the game is set in.
Nice try tho.

That's not true. Yeah, there are plenty of similarities to Scarface. But not enough where the Miami Vice influence is less prominent.

Much like Blade Runner and The Road Warrior, Miami Vice (and to a lesser extent Scarface) esentially invented an entire sub-genre vibe that has been imitated and ripped off by filmmakers and authors for decades now.
I don't know how you'd have grounds to sue for royalties though. How to you put a copyright on synthesizers, super cars, neon lights, palm trees, sunsets, and pastels?

It's 50/50. There's a sequence in VC that literally takes place in a replica of Scarface's mansion.
I've played 3, VC, and IV. I gotta say VC is my favorite for how it portrays a time and place so well.

It’s not just Vice City. GTA V is Heat. The missions are an exact copy of the heists in Heat. Again, it’s a love letter homage to the film. But if I were Mann and my work got homaged by GTA for a second time and made literally BILLIONS of dollars, I’d be kinda irked if I wasn’t seeing any of that $$$

Yeah it seems pretty inarguable that VC is almost a shot for shot remake of Scarface. There are missions that literally mimic the movie scene for scene.
I get the Miami Vice angle for the setting and all of that, but that's more "80s"
and the setting of Miami than specifically Miami Vice. But the Scarface comparisons are unavoidable.

50/50, 60/40, it's a toss up. For me, it's always been more of a Miami Vice thing instead of Scarface. Philip Michael Thomas voices Lance Vance. Another interesting thing is that Tony Montana is officially part of the Miami Vice television series canon. The Miami Vice novelization talks about Calderone learning from the recent fall of Tony Montana.
