I'm more of a Tyson believer than most. He did really have tremendous footwork and speed at the beginning of his career. I'm mainly comparing Lang to the Tyson who started to get exposed and slip. One of the great what ifs is whether Tyson could have maintained his skill and dominance against the tougher competition like Holyfield and Lewis if his personal life wasn't decaying. I'm not necessarily convinced even prime Tyson had the mental makeup to stay locked in vs an opponent who frustrated him for 5-6 rounds. Tyson never had patience to outpoint someone even in his prime.
I agree with you. His speed and footwork when he was younger was amazing.
Like Mickey told Rocky "The worst thing that could happen to a boxer, they get civilized" Very true with Tyson.

The other story is that Kerry blew his audition because he was too dumb to remember his lines. Which makes sense considering he was drugged to the gills and not smart to begin with.

He would have smoked clubber.
Creep was too fast and precise for lang. Lang would have been gassed early.
Rocky basically took creed's gameplan. Creed would have applied it better, as it was his fighting style.
ESPECIALLY if apollo were in his prime. May have dropped him early.

I think had he maintained his work ethic and focus, nobody would have challenged him for many years.
It wasn't just power and speed, that peekaboo style head movement was absolutely devastating because opponents couldn't keep him at bay with the jab.
The problem with that style is it requires unreal athleticism and conditioning to pull off, you have to constantly work throughout the round. If you're out of shape, it's a disaster.

Prime Apollo vs Lang would've been like prime Ali vs a great club fighter. Apollo/Ali wins.

With Tyson, it was also falling in with people who didn't care about him as a person or boxer and only cared about his moneymaking potential. King and his entourage never cared about developing Tyson as a person or boxer, just milking him for money.
Tyson came from such a terrible upbringing that he needed guidance and structure. Basically, he needed a father and got someone who exploited him.

It was a damn shame to see how he went downhill.

Before Clubber Lang won the title he had a heart and drive similar to Rocky's. Had Apollo won the second fight, I think Clubber had the power to sneak up and put Apollo down.

The more interesting question is what the hell happened to Clubber? Sure, he was "figured out" after Rocky beat him but the whole heavyweight division was just him, Rocky and a bunch of bums that probably still had PTSD from their own Clubber beatings when he was rising up the ranks.
He just vanished off the face of the Earth and was still a young guy. Did he go on a shooting spree after Lang-Balboa II?
Is there deleted Rocky IV footage of Apollo actually whipping his arse in a pre Drago tune up fight and totally destroying his confidence?

The franchise figured out that Mr. T was not the actor to build Rocky 4 around. Plus, it was the height of the Cold War, so we got Ivan Drago.
I mean, his acting range in Rocky 3 was yelling one liners. So they traded him for Dolph Lundgren mumbling one liners in a Russian accent.

If he matures as he ages he does. A couple of fighters took him to the cards that had no business getting there against him.

Had Apollo survived the initial onslaught, he eventually would've worn Clubber down and his corner would've had to throw in the towel due to exhaustion. That said, Clubber was my favorite opponent of Rocky.

Dynamite Kid was also recommended by Terry Funk, but he was too short.

Prime Foreman would destroy Tyson

Interesting. I think Prime Tyson beats prime Ali. Ali beat a prime Foreman irl. They should have rematched.

I think Tyson matches up better with Ali than Foreman.
Foreman had one of the hardest punches in boxing history. Tyson would have to fight on the inside because of Foreman's height and reach advantage, and that's just suicide. Frazier tried to stay inside with Foreman and he got destroyed.
Ali also had a tendency to headhunt, didn't like to throw many body shots, Tyson would be able to avoid Ali's 1,2 and work the body early and often.
