re: How much time has to pass before something is longer at risk for a spoiler?

Someone on here got ticked a few years ago because I spoiled the ending to No Way Out 20 years after it was released.

JerseyTiger thought everything was a spoiler.
He got pissed at me for piecing together a movie from the trailer.
Actually helped prove my point which is some trailers literally give away the entire film. He never believed I didn't watch it.
I did end up watching it to see if my description of the entire movie was accurate. It was. The trailer for the Brian Cox movie Red gives away the entire plot of the film from start to finish.

For me, on t.v. shows, once it has aired, anything in that episode is no longer a spoiler. Of course, if someone wants to put "spoilers" or "no spoilers" in their subject line than that's fine and people should avoid responding in "no spoiler" threads with spoiler information.
For movies, I dunno. I think if it's a a fairly new movie still in theatres (or maybe the 1 year from date of release as someone put above), I'd put a spoiler tag in the subject line. Same if it's a movie that is built specifically around a big plot surprise (I won't name any).
Other than that, I think anyone clicking on a thread about a movie that's been out longer than a year or is no longer in theatres, should proceed with caution. No spoiler tags should be necessary.

Bullshite. If someone posts on facebook or says in conversation a massive spoiler from something that happened an hour ago but you haven't watched yet, you wouldn't call that a spoiler?

Spoilers..
In the birth of a Nation the KKK are the heroes of the South. It was the first blockbuster.. Crazy.

Your entire premise must be built around spoilers on message boards. Sure, if some one clicks on a thread to a movie that's been out then expect spoilers. Endings put in unrelated threads or facebook or just in a normal conversation with a person is a dick move no matter how old the movie is. Now, it is more understandable if it's some movie that is so big that you just accidentally blurt something out.

The Titanic sinks in the end.

This really is ridiculous. You should be given the chance to see it but after that it's fair game. You can't go to a party and censor your conversation because one guy hasn't seen Forrest Gump for God's sake.
So I propose one month after release on RedBox, one month after airing on TV, 6 months after publication (for the slow Hodor readers) with a special clause that if it is being adapted to a format you must apply the rules of the adapted format.

Hell the GN to the TWD is completely different and the issues we would be on came out when Saddam Hussein was still in power.

I generally ask "Do you watch (insert show)? Have you seen the latest season/episode?". Just kind of seems like the courteous thing to do so as not to spoil someone IRL.
Unless it's a show or movie that's been out awhile (usually a year or so) then I'll throw out a spoiler tag.

Right but if you are at a dinner party talking to the 8 people at the table and you want to discuss the Sopranos and one guy hasn't seen it. You can't discuss spoilers? It just seems stupid. You had your chance, you didn't see it.

I'm watching Lost right now, so I'm pissed that I clicked on that 10 year thread by accident
Someone hasn't seen it. Doesn't matter how long it is after the fact.

A spoiler isn't anything you haven't seen that is a very self centered way to look at the world.

Generally we'd just move on to something else everyone can discuss. Usually though if someone hasn't seen something that far out they'll say "go ahead I don't plan to see it" or they'll just excuse themselves from the conversation for a moment.

I've personally never understood the need to not know what happens before I see something. Are other peoples attention spans that bad?

Of course it's anything that an individual hasn't seen.

Explain how this has anything to do with attention span. It has to do with enjoying the process of consuming a product. Part of that enjoyment when it comes to some movies is figuring things out for yourself.

How can you base your enjoyment simply on the ending/the reveal not the whole product? Heck I knew everything that would happen going into my first watch of Breaking Bad and I enjoyed the product for what it was. Cliffhangers are usually the cheapest form of writing.
Posted on 3/19/14 at 5:25 pm to Libertyabides71
Knowing how things end changes how you view the whole product. Also knowing how everything is going to unfold changes how you view the whole product. And no, you didn't know how everything was going to unfold the first time you watched Breaking Bad. That's simply a lie, and you know it.
