After listening to the “Living in the 80s” podcast I learned that :

Hughes said the glass breaking scene was his biggest regret of the movie.
The original cut was 3 hours long. John’s relatives are the only ones in the world with that footage. I hope one day it gets released.

It definitely always stood out to me as ridiculously out of place.

And every time I watch it I wonder if they will get in trouble for destruction of school property. You know that janitor was furious when he walked later and saw glass everywhere.
