Holy shite. That’s the most scared I’ve been in a movie theatre in a long time. I didn’t think it was possible to do that anymore after all the duds I’ve seen over the years. But yeah the last 5 minutes was weird. This is my take from it:

The mom and her friend Joan conjured a demon when they were younger. According to the book the demon had to be attached to a male host for them to reep the riches that came with the conjuring. In the beginning the daughter says her brother killed him self at 16 because “Mom was trying to put something in me”, which was the demon. Then it is mentioned that she did not want the daughter to mis-Carry Peter, so the assumption is he was he last male host left in the family. At the end it’s said the demon was attached to Charlie who is not a male host. So in order for them to switch the demon from Charlie to peter both had to be killed. When Charlie was killed the satanic marking was on that pole so it wasn’t an accident. Also, the daughter mentions sleep walking and coming close to killing Peter while doing so. Also you can see the part Joan played to have Peter killed. So at the end you see Charlie with the crown on a severed head and then worshipping more of a false king of hell since it’s not a male. Then Peter comes in and they are able insert the demon and finally crown the real king of hell

The only part I’m not sure about is why the mom had to be dug up and put in the attic

You are easily scared. I found nothing remotely good or scary about this money. It was long and drawn out nonsense. I thought it was a spoof of a real horror film. Did not enjoy this one at all. To each his own.

The horror genre I believe is the most subjective of all genres. I went in trying not to get my hopes up because the last few horrors that had great reviews I ended up not liking. I hated The Witch and It Comes At Night. Also, wasn’t as high on A Quiet Place as most and think It Follows is one of the most overrated horrors on this board. Not because they were bad movies but simply because the scare factor wasn’t there for me in any of them. I had thought maybe its become impossible to really be scared anymore.

I’m not going to say Hereditary is going to keep me from sleeping or anything like that but that was the first time in a long time I had chills during several scenes and could feel my heart beat quickening during tense moments. The critics had the perfect word for it “unsettling”. It wasn’t so much “disturbing” like a clock work orange or requiem for a dream and it wasn’t the traditional jump scare paranormal scary like insidious or the conjuring it was just very tense and unsettling the whole movie.

The actress that played Annie played a hell of a role and her facial expressions of horror made a lot of it. Also, the whole movie was very very quiet and a lot of the scary scenes were during the day which is tough to do. I loved it and hope the genre can take notes from this one

Best horror I’ve seen in quite some...just a real sense or eeriness and dread right from the get go.

The soundtrack and imagery just echoed darkness throughout the entire film.

Everyone acted their asses off. Plenty of long shots with no cuts. That dinner table argument scene was good stuff.

The slow burn middle portion definitely set up the last wild 20 minutes or so perfectly.

Anyways...all hail the king!!! :-)

Didn't expect the daughter to die at all really. That was a shock. The trailer did a great job not really letting you know where the movie was going.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had a very “The Witch” feel to it. A+ would watch again.

Man, I really loved this movie. The director was definitely influenced by Kubric with his cinematography style. This was a lot like a M. Night Shyamalan movie but done better than he could ever do it .

It also had a Donnie Darko feel to it. There was some unexplained lore left up to the viewer to figure out with vague explanations and visual references. That's not going to be something everyone enjoys, and I understand that.

I actually wish it was left more vague than it was. At the end when they were crowning the kid, Joan basically explained a ton of shite in a few sentences. I would not be surprised if that was added later in voice over to appease the mainstream audiences, but who knows.

Even so, I loved it. Very well done movie imo.

It was pretty good. Great cinematography and sound design. The score was awesome. Wish the script was better - I expected more than a generic demonic possession flick. Knockout performance from Collette, her expressions of horror were spot on lol.

Shot of Charlie’s head with Annie’s screaming was horrifying. Loved the shot of her casket being lowered into the ground as well.

Yes, that was 100% ADR, and yes, it was a slap in the face. I wouldn’t exactly call the rest of the script “subtle,” but that scene in particular was insulting lmao

The 5 min long still shot of Peters face in shock in the car after decapitating Charlie was disturbing as frick. I’d imagine that’s what most would be like in that situation

Where to even begin..

From the moment peter wakes up until he climbs into the treehouse I pretty much had my eyes closed. During this period I started sweating profusely and had a mild panic attack.

I left the theater drenched in sweat. Scariest movie I've ever seen?

Toni Collete acted her fricking balls off. The scene at the dinner table when she was giving Peter a peace of her mind. Brilliant.

Thinking about seeing it tonight. I don't want to read any spoilers. Is it worth seeing, yes or no? I've read a lot of mixed reviews.

Every year we get a horror movie that is the “scariest film since The Exorcist.” Hereditary is quite possibly the first film that lives up to that hype.

The score drives a movie filled with absolute psychological horror in the extreme sense; ramping it up to the conclusion. I can’t recall the last time I felt physically ill from dread while watching a movie, and Hereditary did that to me. It was a great film, and absolutely horrifying while being devoid of jump scares.

If you are a fan of true, pure horror, then I highly recommend seeing it. But be ready. And go during the day.

Toni Collette deserves an Oscar nomination. As does the director, Ari Aster.
