WarnerMedia Retires HBO Go, Rebrands HBO Now in Wake of HBO Max Launch
quote:

HBO on Friday said it will be shutting down its HBO Go streaming app in July, following the recent launch of HBO Max, its new linchpin streaming service.

“Now that HBO Max has launched and is widely distributed, we can implement some significant changes to our app offering in the U.S. As part of that plan, we will be sunsetting our HBO GO service in the U.S. We intend to remove the HBO GO app from primary platforms as of July 31, 2020,” WarnerMedia, HBO’s parent company, said in a statement.
quote:

“Most customers who have traditionally used HBO GO to stream HBO programming are now able to do so via HBO Max, which offers access to all of HBO together with so much more,” WarnerMedia added. “Additionally, the HBO NOW app and desktop experience will be rebranded to HBO. Existing HBO NOW subscribers will have access to HBO through the rebranded HBO app on platforms where it remains available and through play.hbo.com. HBO Max provides not only the robust offering of HBO but also a vast WarnerMedia library and acquired content and originals through a modern product.”

Reminder:

HBO Go was the app available to HBO Cable subscribers to watch HBO on non-cable devices.

HBO Now was the standalone service that allowed people to watch HBO programming without a cable subscription.

I'll sign up for HBO Max as soon as it's available on Roku.

Is HBO Max included if you pay for HBO through cable? I haven't looked into it. But it would suck if I have to pay twice to stream stuff.

I guess I'm switching to HBO now and my netflix for 26ish a month

Still beats cable and wireless think I might add hulu but depending what this HBO max offers maybe that covers a lot of hulu and HBO

I saw rick and Morty in commercial thinking ok I guess hbo is changing up

Yes - similar to what you did with HBO Go, you "validate" your cable subscription to get access to HBO Max.

Depends on your cable provider. HBO made deals with over 70 cable providers to give Max as a free add-on.

It depends on HBO and the two streaming device companies coming to an agreement on how much HBO is going to pay them.

Considering that AT&T does not give a single frick about their customers, I'm not optimistic.

What's the latest word on how close HBO and Roku are to an agreement?

They could have avoided all of this unneeded confusion by just calling the new service Warner Max.

What confusion? HBO and HBO Max. Which do you think has added content?

You have always been able to access the HBO Max content on your Firestick via the HBO Now App.

I got a Chromecast just to make the process easier since HBO Max isn’t supported on the Firestick yet.

I don’t love the Chromecast but it’s worked fine so far.
