And all of our popular cultures come out of this time in New Orleans where Black people and white people and indigenous people and the Spanish and all these people were free. And it was short-lived, but it was long enough to produce this amazing, unique culture.
This part of the quote is super telling to me. I have no issue with anyone making any movie with intent of honoring or portraying a certain culture. Its the need to demonize another group (usually White men) that is the issue in Hollywood. This quote shows that he recognizes the uniqueness of New Orleans isn't just the black culture but the melting pot that this city really is. Sure he will lean into black culture but the ability to do that without also making another group "Evil" is what is important to me.
I don't watch A league of their own or 42 or Glory Road and think "What woke nonsense". Those are movies that prop up the achievements of a certain group, show the world as it was but also show that not every man or white person is evil. Now while this isn't a biopic, this director does seem to want to tell the story through a black lense without demonizing others.
Now everyone can downvote away because I am not disgusted by the movie.

I'm pretty sure the prediction was $28-30 million before the barbenheimer release weekend. Not a huge difference, I know.
