i thought it was one of the best works of fiction I've ever read. its kind of a jack the ripper story set in late 1800s new york. anyone that likes historical fiction or mysteries should really enjoy this.

Probably my favorite book. Whenever there's a "recommend something to read" thread, I always suggest it. I always hoped it would be turned into a movie...kind of like a Slience of the Lambs by gas light. I heard it was in production many moons ago, but the project fell apart, don't remember why.

The next book, Angel of Darkness, while not very creatively named, is good too.

God, random memory flashback - that takes me back out of the blue.

I was driving from L.A. after Spring Semester up North to S.F. Saw this book on audio tape at a tuck stop...bought it - popped it in...and listened to the whole damn thing up the I5.

Only thing I remember is that it was sort of hard to follow while driving...but good - because I never turned it off.

Agreed. Fabulous book. Would make a great film. although enough material for an HBO miniseries. Love how the mix of historical figures in fictional settings works here.

Along same lines, "The Historian," by Elizabeth Kostova is an amazing and chilling read and will make you believe in the supernatural.

I rarely read fiction, but this one is very high on my list and I've read it twice. Every so often they talk about a possible movie, but then the talk dies down again.

I read it a while back so I don't remember a lot about it, but I do remember that I liked it. I have Angel Of Darkness but I haven't read it yet.

Angel of darkness was good also. I've read silence of the lambs, the godfather and many of the michael Crichton and john grisham books, and I enjoyed the alienist the best.
