Being that you and I mirror each other mostly, I'll as you. Should I check out some WA films? I've never really felt a desire to see any of them and haven't ever really felt like I'd particularly enjoy them. Should I?

The only one I've seen is Rushmore, and it was just okay from what I remember.

I am not a huge WA fan though I can appreciate his style.

I did not care for TRT, but I did like Moonrise Kingdom

imo, you won't be missing anything if you don't see a WA film

I haven't really seen too many WA films, but this one kinda has me interested a bit.

I wouldn't start on Grand Budapest.

I think maybe something is wrong with me, or I'm just getting old and jaded, but Wes Anderson is really starting to bother me. I respect what he does, but I haven't felt any attachment to his characters or the story in MK and GBH. Moonrise was okay, but the movie trended towards a parody. I thought this one was even more "Wes Anderson". I really did not like GBH, unfortunately.

FWIW, the friend I went to see it with (who sees a lot of movies, but never an Anderson one) absolutely hated GBH. He honestly thought it was one of the worst movies he had ever seen (I disagree, but he had some valid points). So for those without much experience with Wes, do not start here.

I dont know what you could possibly hate about GBH. It had a good plot, it was funny, and entertaining throughout. Plus the cinematography was excellent.

Gotcha.

I do love Bill Murray. Does that make any difference if I decide to check out some WA films?

His biggest roles in WA movies are Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, and Life Aquatic.

Ya, I can see that too. But if thats the case, why see the movie. The trailer is pretty clear in what type of movie its going to be.

My wife hadn't seen a WA film ever, and she totally fell in love with Moonrise Kingdom.

My parents, on the other hand, hated the hell out of it.

You either like Wes or you don't.

Side note, one of my favorite sites is the Kanye Wes Anderson tumblr:

He was a minor character in the RT.

8. Fantastic Mr. Fox

Haven't seen Budapest yet, however:

1. Rushmore (even with his other films, there's nothing else like it)

2. Royal Tenenbaums (there's an incredible amount of detail in this one, even for a WA film)

3. Moonrise Kingdom (really good coming of age story, minus the kids dancing in their underwear)

4. Life Aquartic (a lot of people hated it, but I loved it. felt less serious than his other films. more fun)

5. Bottle Rocket (watched this one second. probably has the most warm hearted film of all of them)

6. Mr. Fox (haven't seen it a lot. it's funny, but doesn't hold my attention like the others)

7. The Darjeeling Limited (I actually hated it. Beautiful to look at, but I just didn't dig the story or the relationship between the brothers)

I found GBH hilarious, but then again I usually like Wes Anderson.

I love the presence of "M. Chuck" in the Cross-Keys Society.
But what makes the movie for me is the genuine affection and love at the heart of the story beneath the parody.

This was my first Wes Anderson movie and I really liked it. I agree with the affection and love at the heart of the story, I was kinda sad at the end. The entire audience was silent when it ended although the usher said at a previous viewing some people were dancing in the aisles during the ending credits. Ralph Fiennes had incredible timing throughout the entire movie and I know I would have appreciated it more if I had watched his other films.

Eta: I think Michael Cera would have been perfect for the bell boy role.

It did end sad.

I disagree about Cera. Think the kid they cast was perfect.

Just saw it last night and have seen all his other films. I liked it very much, nothing unusual for him. Probably the most symmetrical movie I have ever seen, very tightly-framed. Classic WA.

My favorite of his is probably Rushmore. Moonrise and Fantastic Mr. Fox are up there too. I've really liked them all, but surprisingly Royal Tenebaums is probably the lowest on my list, along with Darjeeling Limited.

1. Rushmore
2. Life Aquatic
3. Grand Budapest Hotel
4. Fantastic Mr. Fox
5. Moonrise Kingdom
6. Bottle Rocket
7. Royal Tenenbaums
8. Darjeeling Limited

Saw GRH this weekend. It was as amazing as was expected. I don't care that Anderson's a parody of himself. It's a great movie experience.
