But it was never known if they married before their deaths...until now. We all know that Lyanna and Rhaegar were an item, we just didn't know if they legitimized their love through marriage. Now we know.

I think that's what they were setting up with him leaving Old Town. Feels a bit out of character IMO. Wouldve been better to keep Dickon alive to bring the Tarlys into the fold for Dany and let Sam still become a maester
