Golden State Killer - It's Not Over - Discovery ID

Episode 4 and replay of Ep 3 are on discovery ID tonight. Man this sicko was brutal and slick. It's a pretty scary story. He's also known as the original night stalker. The show says he committed 50 rapes in the Sacramento area over a 2 year period from 1976 to 1978. Then there are 12 murders down the Cali coast with a similar M.O. to the rapes. Nobody was ever caught and they are still trying to track him down.
After initially raping women and girls when men weren't home, he started sneaking in on couples at home and tying up the men and raping the women while the men were tied up. Then he would hang out in the house for a couple of hours.

Patton Oswalt's wife was working on a book about his guy before she died. It gave her nightmares and anxiety, for which she was prescribed medication that may have contributed to her death from an undiagnosed heart condition. You might say he claimed another victim.

My wife is obsessed with this case and the lore around it. She's currently reading Michelle McNamara's book that was just released, and she's listened to damn near every podcast that has ever touched this. There's an Austalian podcast named Casefile that did a 4 part series on it that went more in-depth than any true crime program on any platform - 911 audio, direct readings from the police reports, etc.
It's crazy the way everything transformed with DNA and they were able to link the East Area Rapist with the Original Night Stalker - two crazy violent prolific criminals that ended up being the same person.

I thought it would be about Draymond Green somehow.....

It's such a complex case that has baffled investigators in multiple jurisdictions. There are some intriguing clues too. Like he dropped some papers out of his bag that showed a couple of essays and a map. He also called some of the victims years later after the attacks and one lady recorded him. That's messed up though about Oswalt's wife.

Dude was like the Belichick of serial rapists/killers. He had a 10 year run, but he kept changing up his defense to throw off investigators. He had so many rapes early on, then turned to murder but slowed down the rate of the murders to 2 per year. Then took a few years off, then moved and killed a couple more times in different places, eventually committing some heinous murders sporadically in Southern California and by 1986 he was done.
And they still only know he's a white male, 5'8" to 5"10 with a muscular build. That's it.
I think the DNA evidence has greatly reduced the ability for a sick frick like this to be so prolific, but this guy was extremely methodical until he lost a step when he got older. Father Time is still undefeated.

I watched the show. The murders suddenly stopped in '86, so I assume he either died or got married and changed his life. I assume the former.

It will be interesting to see how new dna technology might be able to narrow down a suspect if he has family that gets into the database.

Well, it's a law in California and most states that every felon gets DNA collected.
So they have DNA from every felon.
And in most states since the early 80's under the guise of "in case you get kidnapped" every kid got fingerprinted in school.
It was totally illegal but was widescale.
You were in the database at the age of 8 - without ever having committed a crime.
So this guy would have totally gotten caught in today's world.

Wasn't there a requirement of parental consent? I don't know because my dad was in the military so I was probably tagged as a baby born in a military hospital.

Thanks for the heads up. All four episodes are replaying early Sunday morning ... I just set my DVR to record them in order.

It just blows my mind that someone knows who did this (someone MUST, right?) and has never said anything.

Damn the detail of the attacks in this podecast is fricked up

Much scarier than any Hollywood fictional horror movie. The audio of "gonna kill you...." is terrifying.
Oh and him attacking the couple from the neighborhood watch meeting is especially creepy as well.

One story that stood out was when the town had a so called safety meeting about him and a man called him out saying something about him having a gun and calling out the GSK.
Holy shite if he didn't go to his house with that night or the next night tied him up and raped his wife. BIG BALLS on that dude.

Just a heads up to those of you who are into podcasts---Season Two of the podcast CRIMINOLOGY is devoted to the GSK-EAR. They have dropped two episodes so far and compared to all the other podcasts out there-this looks to be a really comprehensive deep dive into the case. There are interviews throughout with those involved personally in the case. Highly recommended.

As much as he taunted and kept souvenirs surely he bragged to someone at some point

The episode where they played the clip of him calling one of the victims and saying "I'm gonna kill you"
That was creepy as hell. I can't imagine going thru something like that and then getting a call like that.

They need to get in touch with Peter Brendt from The Killing Season. He’ll have that shite figured out tout suite.
