Oh and him attacking the couple from the neighborhood watch meeting is especially creepy as well.

That one sounded it like it really disturbed that female detective Daly on the show because he had to be there.

I don’t think it works like that.

He’s either dead or in jail. More likely dead as I can’t see someone like that keeping quiet about it after they were caught.

That's a myth.

Serial killers often do quit, run out of steam, or whatnot. Brain chemistry, psychology, and life circumstances change as we age, and it's not unheard of for these killers to decide that they don't have the physical capability or energy to keep up. BTK quit killing, as a fairly prominent example. Gary Ridgway only killed once in his last twelve years of being free after killing dozens upon dozens in a three year period, and it's fairly dubious that he was even responsible for that one (he was, overall, convicted of 48 murders over a span of seven years, 43 of them took place within 18 months of each other, and he wasn't caught for nearly 11 years after his last supposed murder).

For the Original Night Stalker/East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer, the guy was obsessed with not getting caught. He wouldn't have been the first serial killer to stop killing if he thought that authorities were closing in on him.

BTK went into deep freeze too. Some guys do . But yeah, it’s rare . Especially because in 1986 he would only have been in maybe his late 30s .

I would guess that it's probably not as rare as we'd think.

Just straightforward statistics would tell us that a good number of serial killers who aren't caught eventually quit without outside inducement such as their own deaths, incarceration, or institutionalization. Estimates vary from 20 to 300 active serial killers in the U.S. (depending on your source) at any one time; a very significant number of those will never be caught, but their victim totals start plateauing and then stop altogether, usually.

These people are monsters, but they are not machines. They are human, and like the rest of us, their psychology, motivations, hormones, brain chemistry, and life circumstances change as they age.

Nothing worse than seeing a rapist/serial killer holding on too long after they've lost a step. It's like watching Michael Jordan playing for the Wizards.

50 attacks in like 18 months? Is that right?

Watched it last night half asleep but damn, insane this guy was never caught.

Sacramento is not that big, why was every single woman and couple not posted up throughout the night after like the 10th one, waiting for this guy?

Seems like it would be easy enough to see yourself in the mold for an attack and be semi prepared? Those messages are chilling, especially him calling a victim in 2001 after the article was published.

The 60s and 70s were wild, you could get away with almost anything.

I know, right? Today is a very good day. Everybody who follows the case is having the same reaction. And I think it will really get people thinking about the need to focus collectively on these high profile cases to solve them. It gets attention, it jogs a memory, it gets in the Zeitgeist and then...Boom.

This is so strange...

"He later sought out couples, forcing the women by knife or gunpoint to bind up the men with shoelaces he brought with him. He would then stack teacups or plates on the male victim's back and would threaten to kill everyone if he heard a clatter. He would steal items from the house and small amounts of cash, and would help himself to food or drinks from the fridge."

Did this at almost every scene.
