No mention of 3 because Andy Garcia.

Which is better? Why?

Ask this, if 2 had been released without the introduction of 1, it's story as a stand alone.. would it have still been as interesting?

I love the rise of Vito story with De Niro...

So probably Part II...

But Apollonia can't be forgotten.

I love The Godfather Epic that HBO aired last year where they put the first two films in chronological order and added some previously unseen footage. It was like 7 hours long

I really view them as 1 long film and don’t really differentiate between the 2.

Just one long incredible story.

If they had put all of deniros scenes into 1 and made it 4 hours would it be the undisputed greatest movie of all time?

1 was better. 2 was good cinema but the ending was too depressing.

Yeah. The funniest scene in all of The Godfather’s was when Sonny was beating the shite out of Carlos and Carlos wouldn’t let go of the rail, so Sonny bit his fingers to get him to. I laugh my arse off every time I watch that scene.

1. The baptism/confirmation is probably my favorite scene(s) of all time. It's just fricking perfect

I love both of them and it's hard to choose a favorite. If I had to, I guess I'd go with #2 if only because I really like the early stuff of Vito getting started.

This is the answer.

Part II only gets made in the 70's when Hollywood was giving long leashes to creative directors interested in dramatic epics.

Apollonia would have made a much better wife for Michael. She knew the realities and traditions. Kay was a nagging, whining, pain in the arse.

“It was an abortion, Michael...”

You could see the anger in Pacino.

GF I has a character arc -- Michael Corleone's journey from war hero to gangster.

The Vito backstory in GF II is similar -- from simple immigrant to Mafia chief.

In contrast, the Michael story in GF II has none. He starts out as an ice-cold mafia don, and ends that way. The only difference is along the way he gets disappointed/betrayed by various people close to him.

When you get down to it, the Michael story in GF II, for all its fascinating detail and technical brilliance, is a standard gangster movie.

i personally prefer 1. I like that it is centralized in New York. It stays very true to what I like about the mob.

2 is great because of the early years of the don.

That's a good explaination.

Both have positives.

The transformation of Michael.

Vs. The Vito backstory.

Like the one poster said, it's probably better viewed as one long movie.

Sofia Coppola ruined that movie, not Andy.

Also I choose the Godfather Part 1. Every single scene is iconic. I think I've seen a parody of just about all of them. That is pretty impressive for a 3 hour movie
