This is incorrect.

It's always been a fairly mediocre film, and a bad film just in terms of Scorcese. The only good thing about it is DDL. That's it.

Oh, it's quite possible. Watch some movies from the 50's that have people in ancient times talking like streetwise New York greasers.

A movie can be good and not "age well." I know I'll get blasted for saying this, but I think Gangs of New York is a movie that everyone says they love because we're required by law to say that DDL is amazing and Martin Scorsese pisses streams of gold and silk out of his arse, but it's not a movie I want to watch over and over for its timeless storytelling.

I think only it's a matter of time before Hollywood releases a movie entitled "Epic" which is nothing but Daniel Day Lewis in a period costume staring silently at the camera for four hours and it will win best picture because fanboys jizz at the mere mention of his name.

Yep. It's low-tier Scorsese.

Not one comment you made has anything to do with the film "not aging well".

Quippy observation, but I think it's under understood that overall impressions of movies change with the passage of time. Think about Titanic- it was so lauded when it came out as a masterpiece achievement of cinema.. now it's a punchline because whatever emotional appeal it had at that specific moment in time it became big has dissipated to a certain degree.

I'm making the point that it will be a movie that seems visually and "directorally" dated more than anything when I say it seems dated. Also, much like Titanic, it suffers from a having an awfully conceived and executed love triangle dynamic that was crucial to the central plot.

I feel Gangs is one of Scorsese's weakest, most flawed films.

I'm pretty meh on it.

It's way, way over the top and consistently so. The wild bitch with the filed pointy teeth that jumps on a guy and rips open his neck. Gimme a frickin break. That's cheap pedestrian shite and so beneath what I expect of a Scorsese film, especially a historical drama.

The sets looked cheap, as another poster said. A character named Amsterdam? Really? How original. And yes, as most say, Cameron Diaz in this movie will always be one of the legendary miscastings in movie history.

Btw Gangs is about as historically accurate as an Oliver Stone conspiracy film.

Rented it when it came out on video and just knew I would love it. The disc or whatever we used then stuck about 30 minutes in and would not go past that point.

It was so boring to that point that I've never watched it. It's on a list of stuff I plan to maybe get around to watching one day.

This.

Its always been so-so, but DDL is so phenomenal that he elevates the film ten fold.

I remember that it got a lot of criticism when it came out.

Ten fold probably an exaggeration, but he makes the film better and almost IS the film.

I enjoy watching it just to see him. Everyone else is meh.
