Tyrion is more or less serving this purpose right now.

Daenarys and Jon Snow will fill as well. My only concern is that the TV audience will flip shite with the oft killing of central characters.

It's quite the opposite IMO, this is part of what makes the series so good, and is what has made it so popular. They don't have to worry about ratings in the slightest for this season as long as they follow the book fairly closely, and they won't have to worry about ratings for seasons 3 and 4 at all, because ASOS is a ridiculously amazing book that will translate extremely well to film.

Regardless, as the story moves along Tyrion, Dany, Jon, and Arya will make fine main characters IMO, as well as characters like Jamie and Robb being solid for certain arcs.

people who read the book =/= TV audience

and don't get me wrong, I hope the series stays true to the books as I've started reading and love it. things just may not pan out as we hope.

just watching it now, but it looks like this season won't follow the book as closely.

I'm saying the people I know who have watched the show without reading the books love it for the reasons you worry it won't be successful. They love that it's unpredictable, different, and gritty. That's why the show has been a success.

My comments on books 2 and 3 have zero to do with being a book reader. Book 2 has way more action and intrigue than book 1, and book 3 blows both out of the water. The things that make those two books interesting will be the same things that make the ty show interesting. The first season was actually the one you would need concern over it not making it. There is just so much build up in that book and season that it lacks much of the action to hold a common audience as well as a refined one. That is not the case for the next two books.

Just finished watching it, I'm rather disappointed everything that was handled with deft subtle hints in the book is handled with a sledgehammer in the episode. Why do the producers feel as of everything has to completely spelled out to the tv audience? Also I understand some changes from the book, but others make absolutely no sense to me. Well this isnt a book readers thread so I guess I'll get specific somewhere else.

I watched it last night. Really enjoyed the gold cloaks getting owned. that was pretty awesome.

as for Arya, I can't wait to see the next three episodes; especially the 5th. It's gonna be good.

i hope they continue to release the shows a week early, otherwise I just screwed myself for the 3rd episode. I don't know if i can wait two weeks. I guess I'll be watching one and two over and over again.

Book readers smart. TV watchers stupid.

I'm still pissed. Where in the thread title did it say anything about Boardwalk Empire spoilers?

Chicken really needs to add some kind of spoiler function on this board. So far, I've had Walking Dead, Song of Ice and Fire (book) stuff, and now Boardwalk Empire all spoiled with some big time spoilers.

The lack of internal monologues and the need to shorten 800+ pages into 10 hours where the viewer doesn't have the ability to search thru appendices to better grasp certain families/people/etc has a very big effect on how they film the show.

It would be really nice for the board to have a spoiler tag function.
