I liked at the time, but I like it even more now because it pisses off the Shawshank fans boys to such a degree.

I enjoyed it, but that year was so loaded for great movies

1994 gets my vote as the greatest movie year ever.
Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show, Shawshank, Clerks, The Proessional, Bullets over Broadway, Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Four Weddings and a Funneral, Reality Bites, The Paper (very under rated imho), Heavely Creatures, The Hudsucker Porxy even the popcorn stuff, like Speed, True Lies, and comedies like Dumber and Dumber. Loaded year.

I don't see how anyone looks back and chooses anything other than Pulp Fiction - the proof of this is trying to make a top movies of the decade list... Pulp Fiction will always be on there

You can look at my sig and know that I loved Pulp Fiction, but you say this as though Shawshank would not always be on there. Your stated proof would prove nothing. Besides, since when would a compiled top movies of the decade list define what any particular movie fan should claim as his/her top movies?

I thought that was Bilj's intent, but then everyone took off with it. Even in imitating DMIOM, he made a better thread than DMIOM.

no they weren't

Forest Gump was BY FAR the highest grossing Oscar winner (in real dollars) at the time.

One of us read that wrong, because it appears to me that you're proving his point.

well we all have our favorites and there's nothing wrong with that... but I was talking about which movie deserved best picture

To give a baseball analogy - as a child I idolized Willie McGee for his low key/humble attitude with great production... but even as a child I could understand George Brett, Ricky Henderson, and Ken Griffey Jr were better overall baseball players from that era

I just don't see how someone looks at an iconic movie like Pulp Fiction and a nice but unremarkable movie like Shawshank and thinks there's much to debate

I don't see how I'm proving his point, it was not a factor even with FG, but certainly not before, which is what he implies with "back then". I don't think its ever been much of a factor. If anything it was more of a hinderance.

But your proof against his comment was:

quote:

Forest Gump was BY FAR the highest grossing Oscar winner (in real dollars) at the time.

That would suggest that box office did have an influence, since FG won.

ETA: I agree with your point, I just think the proof you presented goes against your point.

I can see why you'd say that, but he didn't say BO is why FG won, he said it was a factor "back then", which implies BO helped other movies win best picute, which if you look at the winners "back then", was not the case. Many times movies that got Oscar buzz weren't released widely until they were nominated. The big exception at that point was FG. If anything it was a bigger factor after, with movies like Titanic and LOTR: ROTK winning.

poorly worded guess. The point was most winners prior to FG were not big BO hits before hand.

Actually I've never seen it. I just remember it being a popular movie that year.

Etm, I haven't said anything because I like you. However, after this long, I'm going to have to request that you remove my wife's picture as your avatar.
