I think I was disappointed mainly because it took the characters to a place I didn't want them to go.

It was always the story about the one family member who tried to keep the family together and keep the company alive.

Turning Michael into a full on selfish Bluth kinda sucked.

That's a legit gripe that I can get behind a little bit. It was weird seeing him be such a selfish a-hole, especially to GM.

Also agree with Udvarnoky about how complex the story can get...it's definitely a chore to keep up at times. The good thing is, in classic AD fashion, Ron Howard is there to explain things and fill in the missing pieces for you most of the time.

And I knew there was a re-edit of the show that will do things chronologically...definitely interested to see that. I will say that one benefit of the plot jumping all around is that rewatches will yield more and more jokes (similar to the original series).

It's definitely uncomfortable, but Michael's always had a scummy streak, and it just got magnified when he didn't have the rest of the family to contrast against.

Season 4 is about how the individual Bluths degenerate when left to their own devices. It's very dark but also quite logical (SPOILERS BELOW):

- GOB has a particularly twisted and sad arc that ends with him having a confused physical relationship with Tony Wonder.
- The oblivious Tobias ends up becoming a registered sex offender.
- Lindsay literally becomes a whore.
- Maeby literally becomes her mom's pimp, and cultivates a lie about a made-up software company that she sinks other people's money into.
- Buster becomes a naive drone pilot and potentially murders Lucille II.
- Michael becomes a massive loser and a-hole.
- George Michael becomes way more of the casual liar that the rest of his family is.
- George Sr. becomes a woman?
- Lucille doesn't really transform, but she was always pretty horrible.

What I like about the way the season ends is the way it possibly sets up Buster to be the next Bluth on trial or in prison.

I think Season 4's interleaving, novel-like approach definitely sets it apart from the previous seasons, but its depth makes it worthy of the brand. It requires more work from the viewer but delivers bigger payoffs. Also worth keeping in mind is that from a story perspective, the entirety of the season is a big Act I for a larger story.

May want to throw a spoilers at the top of your post since some people in this thread said they haven't made it through the season still.

Put a spoiler tag in your post, por favor.

Agree with you here, no doubt. It definitely requires some "work" from the viewer, but IMO the payoffs are pretty solid.

My biggest gripe with the season (outside of the ending) was that there wasn't enough Buster.

I liked Season 4 more than pretty much everyone else. Still funny, still AD, however...

Even Michael was shittier than he used to be.

This made the show less warm. Less forgivable. The entire point of the show was playing Michael as a near unwavering straight man, prone to some lapses in judgement. It doesn't work as well with him being nearly as bad as the rest of his family.

Fix that and you have a better season overall.

Still good though.

I did like that they had a lot of throwback jokes. The chicken reference, the Mr. F references, Gene Parmesan popping up, etc.

I really like season, I didn't have Netflix so I couldn't watch it till it came out on DVD like a year or two later and I couldn't believe how much people hated it because it was damn funny. The later episodes of season 3 are really weak and forced IMO. So I like season 4 better than three but 1&2 were on another level.

Wouldn't be AD without that stuff. And I thought Tobias' story was excellent.

I gave up after a few episodes. I've been meaning to finish it, but it really feels like a chore.

What the hell happened to Portia de Rossi? Is that IRL plastic surgery or part of her character?

It's not part of her character, but they do make reference to it on the show though.

And after watching the season, she still looks pretty fiya (though not as good obviously).

Wait, there's more than one season? I thought there was just one season? I could have sworn they cancelled it in 2002-2003.

I'm just getting to season 4. How long was the gap between season 3 & 4 once it got to Netflix? There's a pretty noticable drop in writing but I'm only on episode 2 right now.

that season is like a Nolan film. Everyone starts out claiming its genious and then are swayed by the haters.

The intelligent ppl love it and never change their mind BC the movie is always fricking amazing.

Actually, intelligent people are put off by Nolan films because they come off like a dumbass trying to make a profound statement. They almost always end up with some major plot point ending up completely convoluted.

Portia de Rossi went from a 9/10 in seasons 1-3 to a 7/10 in season 4.

I loved it. I think what hurt season 4 so much was the long anticipation then the entire season dropping at once. We had what? 8 years to rewatch seasons 1-3 and really learn to appreciate all of the subtleties. It's obviously a very nuanced show. Then season 4 dropped, everyone binged it the first weekend, or tried to, and immediately made a snap judgment of it. Especially the ones who didn't make it all the way through. The way it was shot you really have to watch the whole season to understand the subtleties. Yet there were many that watched the first 3-4 episodes, decided it sucked, ran to the internet, and never watched it again. You can't do that with AD. You have to let it marinate. You have to watch it multiple times. I've watched season 4 three times now and like seasons 1-3, it gets better the more times you watch it.

It was the way it was edited that was the problem. Sorry, but I shouldn't have to watch an entire season for the 1st episode to be decent in retrospect. That's silly. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't finish it. I'm interested to see the new edit. That could solve a lot of the problems with the season.

This is such an absurd statement on so many levels. Do you really think the season was poorly received because one person's opinion undermined it?
