Well, the fief was built so that “he”
would come. Not James Earl Jones.

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

We said this for baseball and football as kids.

Yes bc you’re a normal man who actually did ask your dad to play catch. Or go throw. Or play some pitch and catch. But never ever ever did any native English speaking boy ever ask anyone if they want to have a catch. Goddammit I’m getting mad about this again.

He says it earlier too...

By the time I was ten, playing baseball got to be like eating vegetables or taking out the garbage. So when I was fourteen I started refusing. Can you believe that? An American boy refusing to have a catch with his father.

They asked 20 MLB stars...is it "have a catch" or "play catch"?

18-2...said play catch.

Even Kevin Costner said he had a hard time saying the line because he grew up saying play catch.

He said to have a catch was obviously from the writer and is a New York/Northeastern thing.

But I've waffled on what works best thematically...rather than what is right.

Have a catch is more grown-up on paper and acknowledges Ray and his Dad are not in the past but equal adults so to speak...he's not a child anymore, so they reconcile as two men.

But I think play catch would've worked stronger as it's more innocent and youthful and brings Ray and his Dad back in time...that Ray is just his father's son again.

I think it is regional, like soda, pop, or coke. Waiting in line or waiting on line. Etc.

Have definitely heard people use that, just not in the south.

Yeah, I lost my father just over a year ago and goddamn I have so many regrets. Not playing catch of course but all the things he asked me to do and I never would bother to make time for him.

I was a shitty son, not going to lie and now I have to live with it the rest of my life. fricking sucks. I'll never be able to watch this movie again because of that. Hope this message resonates with someone else because it's going to break you when a parent passes so spend as much time with them as possible.
