I'm watching the hobbit now for the first time since the theater and the scene with gandalf, galadriel, elrond, and saruman is really excellent. Also Martin freeman is better than any of the hobbits in The Lord of the rings, although I like them.

Still my list would be:

Fellowship
The two towers
Unexpected journey
Return of the king

It's not fair though we are comparing extended editions of The Lord of the rings to the theatrical hobbit.

The trailer for The Two Towers was better than any movie that came out that year. That's how badass the movie was.

Are you blind? Lucas levels of CGI mess in the mine. That scene was horrible. They killed about 34k goblins including the king and they had barely a scratch after falling 1000 feet and having a 1200 pound dead king fall on top of them. Yes, it was cartoonish. No other way to describe the movie.

are you on drugs tiger myth

cartoonish is Up and Toy Story and Finding Nemo

It was a bit over the top, but the subterranean lighting helped. The issue with cgi really becomes problematic in the final showdown with the orcs. The rivendell scenes definitely stuck out as being too digital.

There's really two reasons why it unfairly treated:

1) A format that 90% of the audience isn't going to see, and was universally hated.
2) They decided to split a 300 page book into 3 films.

This x1000

95 percent of the fans loved the movie.

I was on a date in summer 2002 when my date saw a poster for The Two Towers. She turned to me and whispered, "that's so tacky."

If the date didn't end there then I hope you got the clap.

This isn't an issue in Extended Edition. I really don't know what Jackson was thinking by removing that scene, since it completely explains Faramir's motives and actions throughout the film and makes him very sympathetic instead of detestable like he is in the theatrical version.

I think Jackson must have been trying to create a little tension and give some room for character development for Faramir. But it just didn't jibe with the book character. Faramir was always someone with the blood of old Numenor running strongly in him and was always wise and thoughtful and was kind of a student of Gandalf.

It was really the only change from the books that bothered me. Heck, I wouldn't even have mined if they HAD shown Arwen at Helms deep which there were rumors as having been filmed.

Also, the actor for Faramir had this kind of dead eyed look, like maybe he had been enjoying the pipe weed. They needed someone with a "sharper" look IMO.

It was an honest, and I thought funny, mistake for someone not familiar with the books. She has since seen all the movies multiple times.

Also to jump in a bit on the unexpectedjjourney discussion.

I did a LOTR tour in wellington nz last year where Jackson's studios are. From everything they said there was SIGNIFICANTLY less use of new Zealand natural wonders and way more use of green screens around "Wellywood" which kind of sucked because IMO new Zealand is one of the things that made the trilogy so damn awesome to begin with.

Pretty confident a ton of places were of natural set. Sure anything involving a building was on a set, but most of it was out in the wilderness. Airshots was the thing Jackson loved the most.

It was a fraction of LOTR...about 1/3rd of the LOTR movies. Multiple guys from WETA told us this.

Two Towers and Fellowship are the best. Really close. Return had cornball line after cornball line. Then that scene when frodo wakes up.

I watched the special features from the Hobbit a few days ago... There are still a good bit of real life NZ settings on the movie. They were saying how some people could think it was just cgi when it was actually real landscape.

Fellowship is still my favorite. But after watching unexpected journey again last night, I can't think of any scene in the whole series better than "riddles in the dark." Bilbo and gollum were just perfect.

Agree. Rohan rising up twice against all odds and the sacrifice of the noble Elves did it for me. And the Ents finally throwing in was icing on the cake. The attack on Helms Deep was epic.
