It is and it isn't.
That's what makes Spaceballs such a good parody, and what makes Han Solo and Chewbacca such beloved characters on screen.
They are practically in an RV driving around being space roughnecks. Or a stage coach, what have you. They are characters whose personalities that transcend time location and are what they are. And Mel Brooks knew this, and uses it poignantly to the fact it's in your face the whole movie: They fly in a Winnebago.

Tie Interceptor was my fav - but no shield makes it a liability.
I will go Awing - fast as the interceptors, with shields and a Hyperdrive.
