Room edges out about 4 or 5 other films that are pretty close.

Unless you want to count Predestination, which got very limited release in 2014 and "wide" release last January. In which case, it was the best movie of the year.

Breathe (Respire)

Written and directed by Melanie Laurent (Shosanna from Inglorious Bastards)

Her first full length feature film. Absolutely amazing.

I haven't seen Spotlight, but it just doesn't sound like something that would interest me.

That's half the fun. A movie that sounds completely uninteresting is completely captivating.

Havent seen Martian, Revenant, or H8 but Star Wars is the best to this point.

Mad Max was great.

I like TFA, but thought it was overrated. Ex Machina was OK and had a nice twist at the end, but it didn't blow me away.

After seeing The Revenant, I really didn't think there'd be any other film able to displace it in my mind as my favorite of the year.

I was wrong. I enjoyed Room more.

Was mesmerizing. But I still like Henry V by Brannaugh a little bit better...because it was a little more raw...and most entertaining was certainly Pacino in "The Merchant of Venice." - That's a great Shakespeare film

This was a very stylized film, but not as overdone as Brannaugh's Hamlet. It still had grittiness.

It's maybe the best "produced" Shakespeare play you will ever see overall, combining that fine balance with great visuals and production values and the gritty era when it's set.
