The actual basic plot is surprisingly simple:

Reed Richards and Ben are friends, Reed ends up building what he thinks will be a breakthrough dimensional teleporter in the store-house for Ben's car repair shop, him amassing all the materials needed is what triggers the government involving him. He gets recruited but stays friends with Ben, however he feels like he's not wanted at the building. Sue is cold at first but after he proves himself and the General disapproves she starts to fall for him. He is on friendly terms at first with Doomashev but gradually becomes icy after him and Sue start to swing. Johnny has no real genius power aside from a love of fast cars and is the general's son. Doom builds the computer that runs Reed's calculations and channel the energies in the exact frequency needed to open the portal, Reed insists Ben comes along as he made him a promise when he first built it he would, everyone is prepped and they suit up, go to the parallel dimension and then things fall apart; Doom is assumed lost, and the four barely make it back to the pods. When the pods arrive they're immediately examined Johnny is on fire, Ben is a pile of rock, sue is transparent, and Reed is warped like he's lensed. They're examine and there's a lot of muh feelings moments, they test their powers, etc but Reed feels like they're essentially disabled that they're no more than mutants (sept) freaks (jan) as they're testing their powers and being emotional, Ben awakens and essentially has the mind of a child at first almost Hulk like but gradually becomes stronger after remembering his home and gets even more "muh freakish" and emotional; it's a pitty party all around. Johnny wonders if he can get a handicap sticker for his Porsche (Jan)
