Saw this movie for the first time this weekend. I loved it.

I went to the Internet to find some discussion, but, could really only find conspiracy theories about it. Which are interesting, but, I want to discuss the movie.

Specifically, Zeigler at the end. He was lying right? To cover his arse for vouching for nick Nightingale who gave bill the password? I beleive they def killed that hooker, but why would she protect bill? She wanted out of the lifestyle?

Was a legit mindfrick. Especially the mask on the bed at the end. Im not even sure i understand what that fully implies.

I can see why critics didn't like it in 1999 but I think time did this movie a favor.

Great movie.

I actually found way less conspiracy on this movie than other later Kubrick movies.

Look at the use of colors in interiors and exteriors.

You can look at the sex parties to be real or something as simple as perusing porn on the internet.

Either way, none of them committed adultery, but it was in their own minds.

Great movie.

That's quite deep. Never considered that.

The whole movie seems like it's making fun of / minimizing Tom cruise..as the character bill and as a person. He is simply a pawn for people way more powerful than him, and his self importance means nothing

My wife was watching it yesterday evening, so I half watched it.
The movie wasn't as good as I remembered it being in 1999. I think it's really hurt by the fact that Stanley Kubrick had been hermetically sealed from other people for years before he made it -- some of the stuff just doesn't ring true. Hookers who look like models that charge $150 for "as long as it takes", a doctor making house calls in the late 90s, the fact the streets of New York look really clean.
I also thought Tom Cruise gave kind of an odd, mannered performance. At some points, he seemed like Jack Nicholson at the beginning of The Shining.
There's some interesting stuff in there. It's a very "adult" movie in that it deals with grown up relationship stuff. The whole movie apparently is all about how Kubrick was kind of pissed that he missed out on the sexual revolution because he was married.

It seemed to have an other-worldly feel to it, which I didn't mind. I grew up among doctors and I've never seen one of them pull out a medical ID card when introducing themselves (as Cruise repeatedly did). Just an odd Kubrick type of world.

I got that it was supposed to be surreal - the entire environment was an artificial or dream reality. It's even possible it was all ole boy's dream. The dream imagery, the wife's dream, etc., all feed into that.

But, it was an allegory about marriage, monogamy, communication (or lack thereof), and how lust and sexual imagery all put pressure on these relationships. That's how I view the film.

Visually stunning, of course. The atmosphere captured by the cinematography and soundtrack may have been Kubrick's best (and that's saying a lot) - and almost certainly the best since 2001 and Barry Lyndon.

I just watched Paths of Glory again last week. Kubrick was still a baby then, relatively speaking, but you could already see his attention to detail, use of lighting, shading (this was B&W, remember), plus a relatively understated soundtrack.

Of course, he got, arguably, Kirk's best performance ever in the film.

Likewise, I think Eyes Wide Shut has one of the best performances by Kidman, Pollack and, yes, Cruise. Stanley had that capacity to put the actor front and center, giving them the opportunity (and responsibility) to deliver the scene. I'll admit that EWS, on the surface, looks like a jumbling together of ideas and concepts, but Kubrick's fans generally understand the language. This is a beautiful film - and, at its heart a love story, albeit an unconventional one.

How did that mask make it next to kidman? Occult group broke in to their house..or..was Alice secretly apart of the group and present that night, thus aware bill was there...

Am I reading too much into things.. or not enough?

I couldn't believe when the movie ended... i felt so much was left unanswered but upon reflection I now realize that's the beauty if the film.

I got the feeling the group broke in his house and put the mask there as a warning. "This is how close we got to your wife and kid. Don't frick with us."

Great Christmas movie, and one of my favorite movies ever. Love the tense vibe and the soundtrack.

I think that was pretty obvious, there may not be one single thing about all of the mostly over the top events in this movie that are unbelievable, and yet the order and occurrence of them within a few days, pushes the suspension of disbelief too far.

It's essentially the too far fetched story of events needed to give Kubrick the fodder for his amazing ability to create visually stunning scenes, which he was a master at. It is an interesting movie for the outstanding Kubrick visual imagery alone, but really, not much else, and yes, Nicole Kidmans, tits and arse,,,, or course.

When the rich patient zeigler was telling Bill that entire event with the master of ceremomies was a charade...

But then bill shows him the newspaper clipping .

Zeigler just says she died , but just because she was a junkie whore, not because the group did something to her.

That was all BS huh?

It's one of Kubrick's finest films. It's a pretty raw, humanizing commentary on the modern marriage and even a commentary on Kubrick himself - the final scene between Ziegler and Bill.
