What an incredible ride! What a rush! Great movie. I went and saw it today on the advice of this thread.

Ava mentions charging her batteries as a method of inducing the power outages. Do you think that her needing to charge is true, or a lie she came up with? If it’s true, then she dooms herself at at the end by leaving. Lots of people online are saying shite like “she’s smart enough to figure out how to charge,” but I think the ending is more beautiful if she leaves knowing that she will eventually die, forsaking herself so that she can escape the black and white room and see the world.

Whether she truly needs to recharge or not doesn't matter. In fact, I never gave it a second thought.

She's going to live forever.

The only fault I had with this movie was the helicopter pilot at the end of the movie having no questions or problems with a random woman showing up instead of Caleb.

She could tell the pilot whatever he wanted to hear. She could read his every emotion.

I got the ending I needed...and I dropped a "holy shite" when it happened.

Ditto. Except that's the ending I was hoping for all along.

I found the story to be both predictable and fairly unoriginal, but hey, some people are easily entertained.

You're an idiot if you honestly believe that. Go watch a comic book movie if you want to see predictable and unoriginal.

i almost wish they had just let her leave "clothed" and ended it with a shot (from the future) about time dead

For me, they could've ended it as Ava was getting on the elevator and Caleb was screaming behind the glass.

I'm not complaining, though.

i definitely think that was a part of his motivation

all of his AIs were female, and he definitely felt sexuality was a key part of consciousness.

In the end his primary motivation was to go where the work took him, it's not something he schematically planned out. he very much went with the flow because to create AI, they would have to possess that human element. His "style" is very important to his creations as they are capable of instinctiveness, spontaneity, deception, etc.

again, this is why i loved the dichotomy in the way the two characters spoke.

yeah my comment wasn't really a complaint

my only "complaint" is a desire to have more conversations b/w about time and the ava to develop their emotional bond

2 nitpicks:

1. the helicopter issue

2. did the power turn off after about time was stuck? wouldn't that have led to all the doors opening?

Just watched this and thought it was great. I wondered about the recharge issue as well.

Looks like it just did.

Probably watch it in a few hours if I find the quality up to scratch if not I'll wait for a bluray release.

I thought it was pretty good.

ETA: if I had one criticism it would be that Caleb reprogrammed the computers the night before. I don't know. I just felt like it went a little overboard with the back and forth "I outsmarted you", "No, I outsmarted you" stuff. Other than that I thought it was a solid, well made, well acted movie.

Totally agree. Just watched this movie, one of the best sci-fi movies I have seen in the last couple years. 9.75/10

Well that's the thing right? That's what makes that scene so important/awesome. Caleb thinks he's one step ahead of Nathan by outsmarting him...then Nathan is like she totally played you. Then when Nathan realized what happened he immediately was in fear because he knows what she would do for her survival. All that back and forth between humans, and it was Ava who outsmarted them all.

The rat in the maze was Caleb. Nathan was the scientist. Nature, of all things, was Ava.

ETA That screener that you all have been discussing is freaking legit!

I feel like the people saying it was predictable and unoriginal are those who completely missed the film's intricacies in the theatre and are now upset in hindsight that others are much more observant than they are.

It's what always happens when dumb people see smart movies. I see the same thing all the time in people who casually dismiss "Fight Club".

I wouldn't necessarily say that people who disliked it are morons

Movies need to resonate and people are different. Was it satisfying on an emotional level? That's all that matters...that you get something out of it

I am bewildered as to why anyone would dislike this movie. It was excellence on screen. I don't know why someone wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't automatically assume that person is a moron. Speaking of morons, Caleb felt like that he had this emotional retardation that made him kind of perfect to be the dunce, the idiot or lab rat. they made the nerd a stooge. Great call. He wasn't looking at Nathan as an artist or his creations art, he was so caught up in the technical aspects.

"How does she make you feel?"

Later in this scene the painting fills the entire frame...
