The odyssey isnt history. Its a made up story. If you had ever read it you would've realized that.

Mostly agree with your comments, but I think this comment is misplaced. Helen is the foundation of the story. She is the catalyst for all the action. Her casting should be close to the source material for the story to be true to its own internal logic. No one is fighting for 10 years for this Helen.

My criticism is largely for those who CAN influence production through financial means. If it bothers someone like Musk so much, why doesn't he invest in a studio that will produce a version of The Odyssey he feels is appropriate? His net worth is over 5 billion, correct? Surely that won't put that much of a dent in his pocket.
so your opinion is that anyone who can afford to make their own movies cannot criticize movies?
also you detract from your argument when you say things like:

Fair skinned, white armed, golden hair.
I think Lupita is pretty and a good actress, but putting her in this role will just be a distraction. The casting and costumes for this movie have been disappointing overall.
Sure.
I don't exactly see Matt Damon as Odysseus either though. But Nolan obviously has a vision.
I wouldn't have thought Heath Ledger would've made a good Joker either until he was the best one since Jack. So I'm just trusting that Nolan knows what he's doing in this regard.

I think you should probably put your money where your mouth is if it's that much of an issue.

I mean that's the literal argument here. That a black woman cast as Helen is a cultural identity issue because it goes against what is defined as so beautiful to start a war over. Multiple people in this thread have mentioned issues with doing against the "culture" of it.
All that said, we're arguing a casting that isn't even confirmed at this point. She was argued to be Athena until it was revealed that Zendaya is.

Do you understand the differences here?
The whole point of Helen of Troy is her physical appearance which is clearly described in the source material.
It's like if Timothy Chalamet played Goliath in a David v. Goliath movie.

This is the standard for Helen of Troy. To cast Lupita as Helen is dumb. Pretty woman, decent actress, not Helen of Troy. This isn't a Netflix remake, this is Homer.

lol ok. "that much of an issue" = just saying something about it?
no, the issue is that the character of Helen is supposed to be beautiful. the potentially cast actress is not beautiful.
she was cast for one reason and one reason only, and that is so that people like you could accuse people of racism for arguing against the casting. you know it, i know it, everyone knows it. you'll never acknowledge it, but you know i'm right.

I do. I just imagine that if Nolan has cast her as Helen there's a likely a reason he has done so and I'm willing to trust that.
And again, we're all assuming she's Helen. There's a solid chance that she's not and she's another character instead.

Where have I called anyone racist for disagreeing with her casting? Please, by all means point that out.
Some of y'all are ate the frick up over people not sharing your outrage.

It will ruin the film for many, just because of the distraction of gross miscasting.

Fair enough

Doesnt it seem a little premature to jump to this conclusion before you even know who is cast as Helen of Troy?

The proverbial "you" will certainly accuse people of racism for pointing out the absurd miscasting of Helen.

It won't happen. The movie will get "Snow Whited".
Btw, that chick-Lupita Nyongo (spelling?) is dog fu#$&@ ugly.

Beauty in eye of the beholder and all, but I think she's got a very striking face in a good way. Bone structure, etc.
She's just not Helen of Troy.

Athena would be more palatable. She’s a god who can probably take on whatever form she wants.
Helen is a spartan though, so if that ends up being the casting I’m probably out. Would take the immersion out of the movie for me, which is one of the things Nolan usually does best
