Okay. Everyone shite on my last head to head. But I did achieve the rare occurrence of having everyone agree.

I think this one may require a little more contemplation.

Duvall or Hackman, who ya got?

ETA: Love the respect everyone has for both of these great actors. In some instances the replies were a little ambiguous....in those instances I gave both guys a score of +1.

The Final tally is:
Duvall - 22
Hackman - 15

Since I didn't indicate my pick in the OP I will here in the edit. Like many of you, to me this is a pick'em where you can't win or lose.

I am going to go Hackman. Not so much based on acting but rather the sense I get from Hackman's "presence." when he is on screen.

I will probably do another pairing Monday. Trying to think of 2 good actresses to pair off. We shall see.

While I probably more regularly watch more of Hackman’s movies than Duvall, Hackman wasn’t in The Godfather.

shite. This is a great one. I think Duvall maybe a better actor but Hackman’s movies as a whole had more impact on me as a kid so I maybe like him a little more.

Robert Duvall is my favorite actor of all time so I'll say him. But it's hard to beat Hackman. Both are 2 of the best.

Hmm. A good question.

Hackman... but...

I think Hackman is just a little bit better as an actor but he can be such a prima donna that there are probably a dozen roles he turned down for minor reasons that would have been wonderful. Duvall is a workhorse.

As a fan, Hackman by a nose, if it was someone in the movie industry than Duvall by a country mile.

Duvall is more skilled but Hackman has entertained me more. Hard to beat Godfather and Lonesome Dove and I get that, but there's only one Coach Jimmy McGinty.

I'm surprised by yalls answers.

I like Duvall movies more and I like him more than Hackman, but Hackman is the better actor IMO.

Hard one. I'll go with Duvall but that probably has a lot to do with my of The Godfather movies and Lonesome Dove.

Duvall for me. His work later in his career (Open Range is a fantastic example) puts him over the edge for me.

I prefer Duvall, but Hackman is a very, very, very close second.

Duvall by a count hair. IMO he is more versatile. I only see Gus in Lonesome Dove. The mannerisms , accent , and chemistry with Lorrie, Call and Clara. The way he uses his hands and body language with Lorrie as opposed to Clara really shows you the difference in how he feels about each. Not once have I watched it and thought —Duvall. I always think —Gus. Also, he plays his characters differently. Watch him in To Kill and Mocking Bird, MASH, Godfather, Tender Mercies, The Great Santini, LD or even something as simple as Days of Thunder. He plays them all differently.

I love Hackman and think he is a Top 10 actor. When him, however, he is always Hackman. He is super intense , but Little Bill was essentially played the same as his character in Mississippi Burning.
