I saw this right after Drive, VERY disappointed.

To be honest, I had to look up the fable of the scorpion and the frog to catch that. Guess I had forgotten it, if I had ever heard it before. It was a nice touch.

Fantastic film. Best I've seen this year.

The violence is very close to the violence in Irreversible. Then i went to imdb and found this
very interesting.

Nicolas Winding Refn sought advice from Gaspar Noé on how to make brutal and realistic facial damage.
very interesting.

It's not the story; it's the character.
you used your semicolon wrong.
ANYWAYS, yes, it's absolutely the story, because story and character are inextricably linked, like a double helix. there's not a huge amount of backstory because that's not the form of the narrative, of which there are multitudinous varieties.
quote:
That things happen is only incidental, only done so that we can learn more about the character.
you're describing any good film. character development is one of the essential elements of whether a film will be good or bad.
quote:
We're not supposed to care about the story at all, IMO, and that's what makes this movie disappointing
that's the blindspot in your judgment. everything that's compelling about the story is a well crafted plot point:
- the lyrical scene of driving through the resevoir ditch down to the creek. Irene squeezing the Driver's hand; the Driver's time spent with Beneccio watching cartoons and playing the blinking game (fOrEsHaDoWiNg)
- the convo in the diner
- the how shannon and the producer met each other
- the Driver's cool under pressure
- who is the owner of the money?
- who set it up and why?
I could go on and on. Kurt Vonnegut has a rule about writing: "Every sentence [or, scene] must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action," and Drive does that just as well as any other movie

Two independent clauses linked together can be separated by a semi-colon, which is what I did. You are incorrect, and you're fairly insecure about your intelligence, which isn't slight, but you waste a lot of time. Your education, therefore, suffers as a result. Grammar is such a loose, subjective, and ever-evolving subject that to correct another opens oneself to egg on the face. But I'm sure you'll link to someone's rule of grammar anyway.
There is no interesting story in the movie. A conflicted figure wants someone to love, but he can't get her because she's married. When the husband is out the way, his violent, corrupted past prevents him from being with her. The mobster vein is boring and doesn't flow in the movie. Drive not only has nothing new to say, the movie has nothing to say at all. Drive is "a prisoner of its own emptiness, substituting moods for emotions and borrowed style for real audacity," as A.O. Scott recently wrote. And yes, while the characters have vitality, they ultimately say nothing, even in their silence because they have nothing to say. I am not surprised since the director of this movie is obviously an avid Grand Theft Auto player.

is not an independent clause. but if you want to accuse me of intellectual insecurity by typing a big block paragraph of justification go ahead and saltshake some more irony into the thread.
ANYWAYS, "There is no interesting story in the movie" will just have to remain your parrot cry, while more discerning movie goers celebrate a great film all the while duping those who don't have the comprehension to appreciate auteur film.

"It is the character" is an independent clause in English.

Would you two pretentious assholes quit arguing about grammar in a thread about a movie.

actually you're right - my mistake - but because "it" is never implicated in the preceding sentence, the clause is just rendered poorly. technically correct, formally poor.
to lube this thread up with some more KV jelly, he also said: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.

I guess that makes me feel a little better.
I'm currently studying sentence correction for the GMAT and I sure as hell don't want to have to deal with it any more than I need too. Especially on TD.

Apologies. See, my behavior in this thread is twofold. 1) I will defend Drive to the death, just like any thread on Tree of Life is catnip where I will perform infite reach arounds on the film and Terrence Malick. Drive is the 2nd best film this year, albeit a very different one, and I'll take arguments to the depths of the ocean on a sinking ship like this thread has become.
2) TulaneLSU is an autistic pedant-troll.

And I forgot about Tree of Life
Did TulaneLSU see that one and write a review?

I enjoyed some things about this movie, but for me the silences became distracting. I kind of saw what they were trying to do but I found myself bored and looking around the theater. Someone would ask gosling a question and he would just stand there looking retarded for awhile before answering. Sometimes he would just smile. It was strange.

No, I haven't.
FTR, I got a 1600 on the GRE when I took it for fun three years ago. It's a lot easier than the SAT. I hope you do well on it.
