Me too. If you're into movies on any kind of technical level, and like anything beyond your standard, popcorn action flick, I don't see how you couldn't appreciate Drive.

I walked out of the theater saying, "that's what action movies should strive to be like."

Watched it because of this thread. What an amazing movie. Just wow. Beautifully filmed and the soundtrack fits perfect.

The soundtrack combined with Gosling and the direction is just fricking mesmerizing. The role didn't really require that much from RG but there is no doubt he is one of, if not the best, actors in hollywood today.

I just think it's overrated. How everyone goes on and on about how great of an acting job Gosling did. The dude just stared the entire movie.

Pretty much this.

This mystique that ever one seems to think the movie has is literally from him delaying every response he has by about 2 seconds. The rest of the time he is just staring.

And if I remember correctly a lot of people were pissed at this movie because the trailer is completely different than the movie.

ETA:

I loved the soundtrack and the overall artistic style of it FWIW.

I'm going to disagree. It's his presence, not necessarily his "acting," that makes the movie work. It's hard to communicate so much with so little, but if you notice the way he clenches the wheel, how slowly he looks at this watch, or when he cracks a smirk, it just works. It's not some great auditory performance, but it is one in presence, and he nails it.

Dude, no way. It's not just delayed responses and staring. You can see his wheels turning before every response. The Driver's a sociopath, he really has to cconcentrate on what he's going to say, and Gosling nailed that. And like Freaux said, it's his presence and all of the little actions he makes. It was all so nuanced.

That didn't affect my appreciation of it. I know what kind of director Refn is, and knew this would in no way be a F&F movie. FTR...from what I've seen of the F&F franchise, I've liked a lot of it.

I don't know...maybe I just didn't buy into the Ryan Gosling as a sociopath the way everyone else did.

He is too "cool" of a character to be a sociopath IMO. Thus cheapening his supposed difficulty to think and speak as a normal person.

Wait, people consider this an action movie? I remember 1 car chase and a shootout, but action movie ??

I also don't get all the love for this movie. It's not bad, but this place is in love with it. Personally, I like the original better when Scorsese did it and called it Taxi Driver. Driver is a re-make right? A troubled loaner who drives for a living takes it upon himself to save a child from an abusive relationship. And halfway through the movie we realize the main character is insane.

But it had an 80s soundtrack and cool scripty fonts in the opening credits.

You must just be a moron.

Obligatory Transformers comment.

It's definitely not an action movie in the traditional sense... I know I'd be one of very few to even consider it. I just meant that I appreciated the set pieces it did have and the style, direction, and acting that went into it. The movie was thin on plot, like a lot of action movies, but you could tell everyone cared about their craft as they made it.

Eta: I guess I should've called a noirish crime caper?

Just watched this movie after hearing about 50/50 reviews....

frickin loved it, I'm the type of person who doesn't so much listen to people's words as much as watching their mannerisms and whatnot to get the feel of a situation, so the minimal dialogue worked for me.
I can't believe this is already on Netflix, but I'm thankful.

If anything, it is a remake of Walter Hill's movie The Driver
