Do you consider directors who don't write their own screenplay lesser filmmakers

Alfred Hitchcock was the most prominent director who never wrote the screenplay to their own movies. Neither did Howard Hawks. Martin Scorsese doesn't write most of his films. Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Poltergeist are the only screenplays that Steven Spielberg has written. David Fincher hasn't been the screenwriter for any of his films. All of them are obviously great filmmakers but it's a lot more difficult to write a great screenplay based on your own ideas and make it into a great movie than simply directing a film with the entire screenplay written by someone else. All of these directors are basically entirely reliant on the quality of someone else's screenplay to make good movies. If the screenplay sucks, there's not much they can do to make the movie better. How important do you think it is for directors to write screenplays for their own films?

not very. A good director can mold the words into a vision. Directors that do both can get in their own way sometimes(Smith,Tarantino, etc.)

No. They know their strengths and weaknesses and don't need to play to their weaknesses. I'd rather have a film maker do one thing spectacularly than do alot horribly (George Lucas and M. Night Shyamalan being good examples)

Not at all. Two different skill sets.
Some do well and can have both, but it's not necessary to be a great director.
Some directors also edit, some also compose music, it varies depending on the person. Some just direct, but they do it well.

Plus Spielberg has provided the story for many films and tv shows, and video games. And he did write A.I.

Films are made by many, many different people, and not just one person. Hell, the director has at least two other directors working with him filming simultaneously in different parts of the world or studio with second and third crews. He is just the CEO if you will, kind of like Les Miles when it comes to football and his staff.

Right. Some directors also produce and some even got their start as cinematographers and cameramen.
One is not exclusive to being good or great at the other.

Ever heard of re-writes? by the director? the director will make all sorts of changes to the screenplay to fit his or her vision ...
the screenwriter is rarely part of the physical production and the director has a vision for the story even if they didn't start out writing the words and story.
lessens nothing
