This. Avoiding an actor's work that is non-political because you disagree with their politics is one of the dumbest things imaginable. I understand if the work itself is politcal, but people who can't enjoy Penn's performance in Carlito's Way, for example, because they disagree with his political views are just beyond stupid to me.

I find it shallow to hate someone for their political views, but that's just me.

it's not shallow to avoid supporting the work of people who don't share the same beliefs as you. if you truly disagreed with their fundamental beliefs then you shouldn't support anything they do, because when you do it just provides their platform to spew their trash.

i.e. If Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Susan Surandon, JANE FONDA and all the other ultra liberal douches weren't movie stars, no one would give a shite what they had to say. And whether you believe it or like it, people listen to them when they spew their trash...because they're celebrities.

Shallow enough that I don't financially support people that I dislike, sure. I forgot that capitalism is shallow

Oh, and fwiw, Alec lost me when he said he'd "Move to Canada" if Bush was elected, and Sean Penn lost me with this little quote.

quote:

Sean Penn: Journalists who call Hugo Chávez a dictator should be jailed

But I'm the shallow one.

Not completely avoid, but I hate watching Sean Penn on screen. Yeah he's a good actor and has stared in some great movies, but everytime I start to see his films, I get agitated in the first scene. That being said, I can't wait for the Tree of Life.

Not only is it shallow; it's intolerant, small-minded and narrow-minded. If the best heart surgeon in the country is a communist and I need heart surgery, I don't give a frick what his views are. I'm paying him to do heart surgery, not cast my votes by proxy. If the best mechanic in the city is a devil worshiper, I'm taking my car to him because I'm paying him to fix my car, not to take over my soul. Likewise, if I pay to see a movie, I'm paying to be entertained.

They usually become celebrities because they are good at their jobs. If they're good at their jobs, I will consume their product/service. If they suck, I won't. It's that simple. People who listen to celebrities because they're celebrities are stupid and my watching or not watching a movie isn't going to change that.

Well, its thanks to George Clooney we have South Park, so its hard to hold too much against. George has never rubbed me the wrong way, neither in his films or interviews. Just seems like a cool guy all in all.

I certainly wouldn't bet against you. At the root of it all, I hate when people insert politics into everything. The type of people who let politics dictate who they watch are the same type of people who will turn this into a political discussion. Everything I'm saying here is politically neutral.

wow the only thing you could watch would be TV from North Korea and Iran.

And no I do not care about the political views of the shows, movies, that I watch or books that I read.

George Clooney provided the initial investment in for the Pilot episode, so I think it was just them basically saying that not even George gets a break from being called out for being a douche.

Originally George wasn't going to be in Team America, but Clooney insisted, so they made him a puppet as well.

it's called believing in something, having convictions and choosing not to support those who promote things contrary to those beliefs. I guess we should have just let Russia spread communism all over the world like their intended to do after WWII.

Life saving heart surgery is a mite different that going to see a movie. And is that doctor using his position to spew political rhetoric to the moronic masses?

then you obviously aren't religious.

Apathetic people like you are the ones who are enabling Sean Penn to get all political at the Oscars, no one gives a shite Sean, stfu and present the award. I will never pay money to see a film that has Sean Penn, pardon me for having convictions.

exactly. Why exactly do celebrities think anyone gives a shite what they have to say other than a movie line or song lyric?
