I don't think so. If it was a must-see new release, they would have a whole wall full of them. If they were gone, they were gone. That would be only for a few days when first released. Then, there were always a few copies at least available. Rushing to Blockbuster after school on a Friday to grab the latest release was always part of the fun.

Anyone ever go into a ghetto Blockbuster? There would be an entire wall of 'Pooty Tang' and like one copy of Schindler's List.

I used to manage a Blockbuster. There's only so much wall space, and there are a lot of customers to serve.

For example, when Titanic came out on video, we dedicated two whole bookcases worth of wall space to it. It was rented out almost immediately. And the moment one was returned it would immediately be rented out again.

If we could have dedicated a whole wall to one movie, we would have - mainly to stop hearing the shite head customers complain about not being able to rent the most popular movie in the world the day it came out.

Also, realize that Blockbuster was purchasing these movies. Once the fervor died down it was a matter of what to do with all that stock that people are no longer renting. We'd sell a bunch as used tapes, but a lot of them got sent back to the main warehouse after a few months.

I don't think they were intentionally shorting the amount of tapes they had. Because back then people were going to rent a movie that night no matter what was available, because that's what people did on Friday and Saturday nights in the 90s.
