The only thing I can think of is they both assumed the Commodore would steal everything in the long run.

It's never fleshed out why they did it that way. Even in the bathhouse they just make jokes about shooting the Commodore but don't offer an explanation.

It's a small gripe, but like I said it just points to the fact that nobody in the entire movie was trustworthy, so maybe the Maverick boys had it planned out that if Bret didn't win that Coop would go along with it, as to double cross the Commodore.

I'm guessing Bret knew all along which made him confident enough to blindly throw the Ace of Spades...he knew he would get the money either way.

The Lethal Weapon bit in this movie is one of my all time favorite "wink and nod" moments in a movie

Absolutely, and the soft LW music played, Danny Glover saying "I'm too old for this shite" as he hops on a horse after a bank robbery is perfect.

I even checked this time to see what kind of pistol he was shooting, thinking they may have snuck old timer hand cannon in there, too, but they didn't.

Haven't seen this movie in quite a few years. Remind me again why Coop stole the money. If Mav wins the tourney, why was it necessary for the theft? Maybe it's discussed when they meet up in the Spa afterwards, but I don't recall the specifics.

Wasn’t it basically so people would assume Gibson didn’t have the money because someone stole it.

And then Jodie Foster figured out their connection so she tracked them down and stole it.

Is that not accurate?

Also, can we talk about the absolute absurdity of that final hand? Just the odds of those hands happening alone are crazy, but for all three in the same hand is hilarious. And yes, I realize that's the point of the movie. But still, it was always just funny to me.

I absolutely love this movie. It's nothing but pure fun.
