I don't mind movies that progress in a slow dirge, but I didn't think these characters had enough substance to make up for what I considered to be a weak central story.
I thought the rape and revenge scenes were cheap thrills that had no bearing on the plot, and didn't make Lisbeth any surlier than she was before. I wanted this movie to tell me what makes her so special. Why is she an intriguing character? The mean father angle didn't do it for me. Perhaps the other two in the trilogy convey information that gives her more retrospective presence. I'm not really interested in watching them. As far as the actual mystery, I couldn't have cared less. Psychotic nazis. How inspired. I got the idea that the cold case was intended to be a backdrop for the development of Mikael and Lisbeth, I suppose because that was the only way i could rationalize how mundane and worthy-of-CSI-Sweden it was. Whether I look at this film as a pure mystery thriller or a character study, it fails in either respect. Great acting does not give depth to one-dimensional characters.
ETA: To qualify, this movie irritated me more than most because I watched it late at night and felt it wasn't worth the missed sleep.

Well this is what I wrote in TGWTDT thread from a few weeks back after watching it.
Looks like I was correct, people who don't like the character don't like the film.

I liked the structure of the film having two lead detectives whom aren't traditional private eyes, whom aren't private dicks at all working on the same case separately. Having only one know about the other then bringing them together in the middle I thought was really well done.
A mystery film where the mystery itself plays second fiddle to the mysterious background of it's lead. I found the character of Lizbeth and the actress who played to be the most fascinating part of the film and whether or not you like her character probably will determine how much you like this film.

The real title of this book was " men who hate women"
In the book there is a lot more background about the government system that places adults with problems as wards with a court appointed overseer who has cart blanche over their affairs and finances. Stieg larrsen wanted to call attention to the abuse this system has caused many swedish women

I didn't know what there was to like about her. She doesn't talk much and she looks as uninterested in the events of the film as I am.

Watched the original last night for the first time and am really against a remake.
I just saw this recently as well. Haven't read the book yet, but plan on it. I'm not fond of a remake also.

It is too bad that most likely we will not see him in another Bond film, UNLESS Christopher Nolan does take on the next Bond film after his Batman and the other flick.....

scoff
I'm not conceding that it was predictable, but even if it was, so what? Things don't have to be unexpected to be enjoyable.

Lisbeth had a kick-arse rape and revenge scene. The rest of the movie was boring. There were too many names to remember.

Couldn't agree more. After anyone's seen enough movies most can be somewhat predictable if you know the genre you're watching you most likely know the formula.

I didnt think the first one was predictable. But the second and especially the third one were.

I finally got around to watching this. It was ok, definitely not deserving of the hype though. I think this is one of those instances where a foreign language movie is overhyped due to people wanting to feel "cultured".

I simply mean the mystery aspect was so straightforward and generic to me that I was waiting for some kind of twist on it. Instead, I found it a half-assed crime drama fit for a CSI spinoff from start to finish. I can think of several films where the destination is foreseen but the journey is still spectacular. I didn't find this to be one of them.
