As much as I love the John Wayne version, the Jeff Bridges version is better.

He's been being great for a long time.

1974 Thunderbolt and Lightfoot
1975 Rancho Deluxe
1981 Cutter's Way
1984 Starman
1986 8 Million Ways to Die
1988 Tucker: The Man and His Dream
1989 The Fabulous Baker Boys
1991 The Fisher King
1992 American Heart
1995 Wild Bill
1996 White Squall
2009 Crazy Heart
2016 Hell or High Water

Loved him in all of these. Dude puts himself into the character and forgets he's Jeff Bridges.

Some more...

1971 - The Last Picture Show
1984 - Against All Odds
1993 - Fearless
1994 - Blown Away
1998 - The Big Lebowski
1999 - Arlington Road
2018 - Bad Times At the El Royale

and of course in The Old Man currently.

and yes...the Jeff Bridges True Grit version is better.

Glaring omission there.

Well, that’s just like your opinion, man.

Seriously though both movies are great. John Wayne’s version is iconic due to John Wayne himself, and is perfect in the context of its time and place. Jeff Bridges version stays closer
to the story and tone of the book. It is also perfect in the context of the time and place
it was made.

It’s really more a matter of preference that quality.

Crazy Heart is amazing. But he turned into "old man Bridges" with a startling quickness. He can be unintelligible at this point. Which kind of worked in True Grit--which is epic and a favorite of mine. But went off the deep end starting around "The Giver" and Hell or High Water.

It's hard to watch him in "the old man."
