quote:Hell, they could have made one together in the '60's, Eastwood was starring in Rawhide back then. He could have been good with the ole Duke in a movie like the War Wagon or Rio Bravo or El Dorado, any of those.
They should have made one together sometime in the 70s. That could have been great.
but personally speaking, I just think Eastwood's movies were probably too violent looking for the ole Duke.

Tombstone was a great movie, brah, but to each their own era of movies. I guess you just didn't like how it was made or whatever, but Val Killer was gold as Doc Holiday. But I also liked the old showdown at the OK Corral with legends Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.

All I know is, is that you won’t ever see another Wayne or Eastwood. It’ll be a sad day when Clint is gone

Saw plenty of Wayne movies growing up. He was ok but much prefer Eastwood.
Also prefer the Bridges True Grit over the original.
*Did you know Mattie in the original was Lane's mom in Better off Dead?

Kind of an unfair comparison because Leone is so much greater than Ford. However, I'm not sure Eastwood ever turned in a performance as good as Wayne's in The Searchers
I think it's arguable that Wayne was the better actor, but I preferred Leone's direction. And Morricone's music. The cinematography became so much better and more vivid by the 60's and 70's Westerns - shot more outdoors - that they just look better than the old sound stage pictures.

Agreed 100%. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Once Upon a Time in America are all far superior to anything Ford ever put out (I know Eastwood was only in the former, but point stands).

Bridges sucked in that movie. I'd need closed captioning to even try to understand most of what the hell he was saying the way he mumbled his lines with that exaggerated twang in his delivery.

Clint is still going strong at his age with making quality movies and all, dude is amazing. I saw Cry Macho and like all of his films it was good stuff. But I keep hoping that he makes 1 more legendary western film to leave us with. Especially, to make 1 with his lookalike son would be amazing. I'll keep my fingers crossed on that.

quote:I liked ole Sergio Leone's direction too, but I don't think Wayne was the better actor. I thought he was stereotyped as an actor, and all you could really see him in was westerns even though he made some other era movies. Imo Eastwood was the better actor, but it's funny to me because I was more a Randolph Scott guy than I was of either Wayne or Eastwood. Lol

This is not talked about enough. His or the Coens idea of gruff backfired and Damon was useless.
Mattie carried that film which also had too many night scenes where you couldn't see shite.
Compare to the original where Wayne carries the film, Glen Campbell is better than Damon and Duval puts in a typical great supporting role.
Plus the original has scenes of levity in it amidst Matties serious zest for revenge. The Coen's version (while maybe more true to the tiny book) isn't viewer friendly and somewhat off-putting and dull.

Everyone shitting on John Ford needs to watch Five Came Back on Netflix. It's pretty clear that every director interviewed in that documentary series was in awe of John Ford.
He's one of the top directors to ever work in Hollywood and people are acting like he was Tyler Perry or something.

I agree, John Ford made some classics like the great Stagecoach, the Searchers, and I really liked his trilogy of She wore a yellow ribbon, Fort Apache, and can't think of the name of the last one. Lol

I’m not sure how you could keep that hope after watching cry macho. It’s time for Clint to ride off into the sunset.

Nah, man, some of y'all can be so cruel, when you get up there in age like that I hope you're as effective as ole Clint is. I enjoyed Cry Macho, good movie to me, and the guy continues to be effective at that age. Clint strikes me as the type that will go out working, no riding out into the sunset for him. Lol

As a huge fan of the Coens, I didn't like anything about the film. There is always that danger that remaking an iconic film can drift into unintentional parody and that is exactly what I think happened here. Perhaps folks unfamiliar with the original liked it better. It certainly received its fair share of critical acclaim and success, but Hollywood being shite for however long can explain a good bit of that.
