Yeah Crockett paid $4 million according to JR's first book. Then a year later JCP was roughly $4 million in the hole.

Wasn’t the only reason but it certainly didn’t help.

In general, money wasn’t coming in from TV or PPV, they weren’t running profitable house shows because they were blowing off the Carolinas to run across the country, and Crockett and Dusty had moved their base of operations to Dallas from Charlotte because Watts’ office lease there was part of the sale.

Having the old school office workers trying to keep up with all the expansion Crockett tried to do meant that they didn’t realize how far in the hole they were until it was too late.

I can understand them running Chicago and Philly (the UIC Pavilion and Civic Center were perfect venues too). Not for Starrcade though.

They were making money in Chicago, Philly, and Baltimore.

Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, San Antonio, Albuquerque, etc? They either weren’t drawing or they weren’t making enough to offset travel costs compared to running Gaffney, SC.

They'd make more money running some HS gym in the Carolinas then they did running the Forum or Sports Arena in Los Angeles.

Reisor Bowden was so bad, it was hilarious. And he was obviously intimidated by the wrestlers.

Ole is a miserable prick.

As far as a Georgia retrospective, look for Back To The Territories - Georgia with Jim Cornette and Masked Superstar. It was on YouTube recently. That is probably as much a look at the whole territory as you would get as far as history and going through specific periods.

What was great about Reisor is that he’d laugh or make funny faces while holding the mic as a heel practically threatened to kill somebody.

YouTube - Back To The Territories - Georgia

This is still up until Kayfabe Commentaries rotates out their free shows that they use as teasers for membership to watch their whole library. I wouldn’t expect this one to be up that much longer.

At least he has reasons to be a miserable prick nowadays.

Anybody catch Ep 2 on the Kauffman-Lawler fued?

It was phenomenal. I had no idea Kauffman was essentially a regular in the territory up until his death.

Also amazing that Letterman basically attributed the King slap to launching his late night show into the mainstream.

Memphis Wrestling

Can't be touched even when the WWE was in it's prime.
The mid-south coliseum was sold out every Monday night for a decade or so.
They also mentioned that 7 out of every 10 tvs in Memphis and the surrounding areas were watching them on Saturday mornings. Unreal

They had so many black fans as well, as did Mid-South, especially with JYD as champ.

The common media narrative now is that pro wrestling never had minority faces of the brands, all the while WWWF had an ethnic champ for years in Bruno and territories like Memphis, but especially Mid South always had black wrestlers at the mid-top of the card to draw in more black fans.

JYD was champ 4 times, and they also had Ernie Ladd, Kamala, Butch Reed, etc., and supposedly back when we everyone was so "backwards" and not enlightened to today's sentiment.

Also all the Somoans were all over the place.

It's just patently false.

AWA episode this week. I know it was a gigantic territory and had some really great stars, but man, the personalities in old time Southern wrestling was just do much greater than up north.

The Memphis episodes were great. The AWA episode... Eh.

Hell even WCW stuck a rocket to Ron Simmons and made him world champ. Bill Watts may have been a terrible POS and racist, but he knew black champions connected to their audience.
