You don't think the Chinese market matters in the Hollywood decision process?

China is such a tricky market. They only let in a certain number of foreign movies in each year (believe it’s 30 now). They have to approve of the content of each movie as well, and studios usually get less of a cut than they would in other foreign markets, definitely less than they do in the first two weeks in the US.
The release schedule with them is all funky too. Sometimes they get our movies 2-3 weeks before we do and sometimes they are 2-3 months behind.
They tend to love our blockbusters with diverse casts, but if you are putting an Asian character in your movie, either the character or the actor better be Chinese or have some ties to Chinese cinema or they won’t give a frick about it.

It's still the 2nd biggest market right?

Pretty much. The UK was for the longest time. If India, Brazil, and Indonesia could get a decent sized middle class, that could change.
I’m always surprised by Japan’s lack of interest in the overwhelming majority of our blockbusters, especially compared to South Korea. Most of our big blockbusters do well in Sourh Korea but given its population, Japan doesn’t seem to care.
In the last few years only 3 American blockbusters have hit $100million there: Bohemian Rhapsody, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen. The first two were a little over $100m, the last was around $250m.

Interesting development: Us made $7 million from Thursday previews. Boxofficemojo.com is predicting over $50 million for the weekend.
If that ends up anywhere close to accurate, it'll be interesting to see Captain Marvel's percentage audience loss. Mojo predicts 45%. Us is rated R, so audience overlap isn't 100%.
Those obsessed with this movie failing: CM is still going to get close to $1 billion this weekend.

Finally went and saw it with the wife yesterday. I'd say it was a pretty standard MCU film, solidly middle to lower middle of the pack. It definitely missed on a few of it's themes/beats, but I wasn't bored watching it so it didn't upset me too much.

Solid Thurs number, especially with US opening up. I'll guess 35-37 mil this weekend.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Could be a little lower, but I don't think so.

1 billion is guaranteed, but I want to see if it hits 400 million, domestically.
