I really disliked this movie and think it's actually the worst in the MCU...but hyperbole like this is why even having that discussion is impossible...because I'd be lumped in with this kind of take.

Not even sure it’s the worst MCU movie. Bottom half of the universe, but Thor2 and IM2 were pretty forgettable

Did they erase Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and Thor 2 from history?

Or they've backed themselves into a corner here defending Larson and have to claim that they enjoyed the movie to avoid being ridiculed mercilessly.

There seem to be 2 camps (and I haven't seen CM):

1. People who thought it was decent but not great.
2. People like OP who are calling it some variation of awful.

I disagree about which camp seems to be more out there in its reviews of the movie, and it seems like the worst of all time talk is a little more driven by being wedded to an opinion on Brie Larson.

Its not even the worst origin story. OG Hulk and CA:FA are both worse. Hell probably Thor as well.
It was overall very "meh" but nothing to be salty about and all the crazy fears I read on this board turned out to be 100% bullshite. I especially liked the "feeble old woman as Kree Supreme Intelligence" melt.

No...I just preferred them. Don't think any of those three are great or even all that good...just better than CM.

For instance, while Ultron was ultimately a failure as a villain and nowhere near as menacing as he should have been, there were plenty of good things in the movie. If nothing else, Ultron gave us Vision.

I happen to like Thor as character, so I give his first two movie higher praise than most. Thor was one of the only Marvel comic book heroes I really liked as a kid in the 70's. Dark World was a let down, and I'm glad they finally decided to jettison Natalie Portman from the series after two bad attempts, but still there was the interactions between Thor and Loki and some solid stuff on Asgard.

Iron Man 3 is terrible though, I agree. This was, to date, my least favorite. But...it's saved by a charismatic Tony stark who you've come to like. Still...not a good movie, just better...in my opinion...than CM.

Funny you mention that, because one of the things I disliked most about CM was the non linear story telling. It's not that I dislike that as a means to tell a story, just that it was the wrong way to go here. Honestly, Cap's movie does it the right way, and gives you reasons for why he's who he is AND ultimately why the guy will NEVER turn on Bucky.

But in CM, you never learn to care about Carol. Other than a few flashbacks, there's no struggle over which she needs to overcome. It isn't until the very end when she "stands up" to the Supreme Intelligence that we'd asked to link together all the flashbacks into a story of her always overcoming one thing or another.

Had they simply told her story in a more linear fashion, spending more time showing us who she was while Carol and what drove her, there might have been more "there" there.

But it made me go back and re watch the first Cap. It's much better than people remember, and really does a great job at introducing the character.

Did anyone else bust out laughing when No Doubts "just a girl" came on? That scene was cringe worthy

Yes. It was terrible.

There were several like this, though. Did anyone NOT see her going Indiana Jones on Judge Law in their final duel? As soon as he started trying to talk her about of using her powers I turned to my wife and said, "Oh no...she's going to Indiana Jones him."

Marvel retconning Fury's eye injury to a cat scratch...after having him make a big fricking deal out of it in Winter Soldier while talking to Steve about how "the last time I trusted someone I lost an eye!"

I get why people don't want to pile on a movie that was getting shite canned before it came out by guys you maybe don't want to be linked with...but really, this was not a good movie.

why?
song choice fit with the rest of the music in the film, and the flashbacks that were being recalled were all of her failing - or being told she would fail - strictly because she was a girl.

non linear

CM is told in a 100% linear structure. We never move back and forward in time. The first flashbacks are triggered by an alien device, but they are interactive. Carole and the aliens have some amount of autonomy within them.

The other "flashback" comes from a black box recording that multiple characters are listening to.

The movie starts with Carol with Kree and moves in a straight line all the way to the end.

Not trying to invalidate the lack of emotional resonance you noted (though I think this is common to every MCU origin), but
CM is linear storytelling.

Nothing wrong with that, but they are worse than Captain Marvel.

That's an occurrence that doesn't save the movie from being on the lower end.

There's a lot more to dislike about any of the three movies I listed than Captain Marvel.

Other than Batman Begins, has there been an origin story that really nailed emotional resonance of the character.

Man of Steel tried, but got too dark and emo.

Wolverine Origins was bad. XMen first class was enjoyable, but not particularly emotionally resonant. Other MCU attempts are fun but not emotionally complicated.

Maybe I'm forgetting, but other than Batman, origin stories and genuinely powerful emotion don't really go hand in hand.

The First Avenger is the second best of the Origin movies behind Iron Man.
