It was pretty clear that they can't until the prequels made them cartoony superheroes

Is Luke considered a powerful Jedi? I know he has the pedigree and all but in the movies he never seemed all that powerful.

If you read the stories beyond the movies, Luke becomes an insanely powerful Jedi.

If you check out his wookieepedia page, they describe some of his powers. There are some instances where he became so connected to the force that it says he became the literal definition of an immovable object and not even the black hole at the center of the galaxy could move him.

It isn't until later after the movies that Luke's powers really reach their maximum.

This thread just reminds me of how awful that speeder chase scene in attack of the clones was

AOC isn't good enough to just be called clones. It might be the worst movie ever made.

Yes, but not the most powerful. Several characters are more powerful, Han and Leia's 2 boys and a handful of Luke's students IIRC.

This is a better answer than I gave. In the early books he was still trying to figure out a lot on his own. The maturation of his abilities through different circumstances and failures always kept him very humble but still confident enough to not back down. It was fun to read and I'm disappointed the new movies are basically gonna have to skip that entire process.
I'm pretty interested to see if an existing storyline or something entirely new is put in the new episodes. They're gonna have to adopt certain well-founded aspects like the twins and I'm sure Mara Jade.

I wish they could throw in Mara Jade, but the problem is with them using Hamill as Luke again. With him being so old, I just don't see it happening.

Also, if it is a "Luke hands over the role of jedi leader to someone else" type story with it being the end of Luke's life, lets not forget that Mara Jade dies long before Luke dies.

Someone else important dies as well, but I'm not saying. Going to be some really sad people in the theater if/when they find out.

That's what I'm talking about. If Yoda can levitate and other Jedi can execute controlled falls, is it really a huge leap in logic to assume that some Jedi can fly?

In the EU, they explain that some Jedi are better at certain force traits than others.

Corran Horn, a prominent Jedi in the EU, can't levitate objects, but is an excellent pilot. There are some that are healers, some that are tech experts, some that are combat masters, etc.

I wish they would just continue the story. I have no issues with them using other actors and Mara Jade is one of my favorite Star Wars characters.

Scruffy is sad.

What are they going to force push against when they're in the sky?

Mostly because the Star Wars universe has never been consistent with its rules. The prequel/sequels even had moments where Jedi could run at superhuman speeds - a talent that would certainly have been useful and used any number of times in other episodes.

Remember, the Jedi of the Republic trained as Padawans for years before becoming Knights, then Masters upon taking on a Padawan of their own.

Luke had, for all intents and purposes, a couple of weeks with Yoda on Dagobah after the Battle of Hoth before facing Vader. If you read Shadows of the Empire, Vader says he wasn't taking it easy on Luke because if he could defeat him easily, he wouldn't be worth recruiting.

Luke basically read "The Idiots Guide to the Force" and went and fought the most power Sith ever and survived, if not held his own.

The way they showed the Jedi in the prequels makes it easy to forget this. Luke literally spends a few days with Obi Wan, and then minimal time with Yoda. Next thing you know he is battling Vader.

My issues with the Force is the way it was perceived between the OT and the prequels. In the OT the force is more mystical, and they even make reference to Vader being part of a religion.

Then in the new movies it is has more to do with midichloians, and being force sensitive. It sounds like they went from the notion of anyone being able to use it to only a select few. Or at least only those with enough force organisms inside of them.

Well yeah, but Vader was never going to kill Luke. He clearly was in charge the entire fight. Same when they were in the Emperor's Chamber. He was still taking it easy on him and then he got cornered.

It is interesting and frustrating to make sense of when you compare the two trilogies. The originals were fairy tales in a space setting. I still wonder if Lucas thought inserting the metachlorian nonsense was a way to convert the prequels into science fiction

Ehhh Exor Khan was probably the most powerful Sith ever.

Brought back the Sith single handedly. Was able to control the powers of a Sith amulet and also destroyed Luke and his Jedi Academy as a GHOST.
