As does Royal Pains. From the previews, it appears that Henry Winkler is going to play the father.

Yes, it's basically medical MacGyver set in the Hamptons. It's not as good as some of the other USA shows, but it's still better than half of the crap on the networks.

I kind of like this angle but I wish they would focus a little less on the "side" jobs and more on the investigation.

Burn Notice and Royal Pains on their best night are mediocre shows. Americans have become so accustomed to the garbage the networks and some cable stations provide they are willing to accept whatever they're given.

So, what would you suggest?

The obvious suggestion would be for the American television viewing public to forgo poorly written shows until producers receive the message that mediocrity will not be accepted. However, given the inability of producing such a boycott, that is not a practical suggestion so I simply impose my own embargo on bad shows. It may not produce desired results but then I'm not watching shows like Burn Notice and Royal Pains so there are accrued benefits to be earned from the effort.

You're going off on this diatribe and not actually telling us dumb network viewers what is better. I like Burn Notice, but it's not my favorite show by any means. So please tell us, what shows do you like?

While I'll not speak to the acting and writing so much (though I would put them above average), they are conceptually interesting.

Burn notice: it just shows (I guess similar to McGyver-so that doesn't help my case) how things can be quickly adapted in the field to suit your needs, while unlikely to be used, still cool that it can be legit.

Royal Pains has even more to offer in regards to using unorthodox approaches to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Again, far fetched, but all could work IRL in a pinch. The theories behind his medical approaches are also sound. TO me, it is also entertaining.

Give me a show you would consider worthwhile and maybe we can see if this is just a difference in show taste or that I am truly intellectually inferior to you (not meaning this in a challenging or spiteful way).

Yes. I'd rather watch Burn Notice than anything on CBS, ABC, etc. I used to like House on Fox but it became unbearable after the 3rd season save for a few solid episodes. NCIS is really the only big network show that I have any interest in.

Now, though I watch Royal Pains from time to time, the main character is one-dimensional and the conflict has been generally tepid since the first episode.

I don't recall calling the viewers dumb. Just satisfied to accept what they're given. Sorry if you thought I was suggesting something other than what I stated.

I watch very little episodic TV. I enjoyed Lost and some of the shows FX produces.

I liked Damages, Sons of Anarchy and Justified. Raising the Bar on another cable outlet is a good show also.
