Prison movie
Vince Vaughn
92% on RT
Amazon Prime

We haven’t seen much of VV since he came out as a Hollywood Conservative and this movie is amazing.

Ultra violent and old school, no pun intended.

Highly recommend.

I can’t get over how much I loved this movie. So many layers.

It’s so interesting watching VV’s character being a good guy that has to do so many bad things front to back that he does not want to do and always doing them up to the point that he thinks he can stop and still get to where he has to get.

The movie blew me away.

The fight scenes were bad and the violence was over the top and silly but I like that sort of thing. Its a fun watch.

I thought the fight scenes edged over a few times into a little too choreographed but i didn’t mind them for the most part because if the character he was portraying was commiserate with his real age it’s a guy in his late 40’s.

The fights were close in skill and brute strength for the most part.

I’ll buy that more than him climbing walls and doing flips like no 47 year old guy could actually do.

Yea, I thought the movie was really good. I liked the change up with the fighting style.

The problem is Vince Vaughn just don't know how to throw a punch. The choreography wasn't necessarily the problem.

The guy that wrote cell block 99 also wrote a movie titled bone tomahawk with Kurt Russell. Also a really great underrated movie.

He’s got a novel out as well that I’m pretty sure jaimie foxx is staring in.

I didn’t realize this movie was connected to Bone Tomahawk. It makes sense. That was another very entertaining movie with some big stars that slid under the radar but was very good.

I mean he was supposed to be a broken down ex boxer. It wasn’t supposed to be pretty.

Maybe its just me, but the acting, directing and writing in this was horrible. For example, the scene where they get back from the boat ride and have the shoot out with cops from 8 feet away with multiple machine guns...you hear the PD call out officer down and then there was no officer down. ...and VV just walks up and shots the bad guy and the cops waltz over to arrest him. Laughable.

VV looks like a robot being paid to do a movie...just walks around with scowl on his face.

Maybe its was a comedy and I didn't get it.

I love this movie. Absolutely love it. It's a definite throwback to 70s grindhouse films, but it effectively tells the story of a man being crushed by the system who still maintains his dignity while still being inevitably destroyed by powers greater than himself.

I also like how the film takes its sweet arse time getting to Cell Block 99. Two scenes really stand out for me. One, when he beats up the car when he finds out his wife has been cheating on him. He destroys a car with his bare hands in a fit of rage and then comes inside and has a rational discussion with her, even taking some responsibility for driving her away. It's a great way to tell almost everything you need to know about the character, his propensity to violence, and also his value system.

The second great scene is the dock scene. They make it clear he can get away. He owes nothing to those two other morons he's saddled with, and the cops don't know he's there. But he goes back to the lot to kill both of them in order to save the lives of the cops in the standoff. Another way the movie makes its case for ethics over self-preservation.

A fabulous, super violent film.

Watching now.

The grit and detail is pretty damn good. Lots of positives, some negs but that can be overlooked.

He just got in and met with the “Dr”.

Can’t get over the fact of why the frick didn’t be just walk away. Of course we wouldn’t have a movie then but a better plot device in that regard would sit better with me.

Plus, not sure of the process but is there any certainty that he would have gone to Redleaf as opposed to another facility?

Yup.

Both outstanding.

And both put these very utlraviolent, yet human struggles front and center.

His next movie is about to debut at the Venice Film Festival. Its called Dragged Across Concrete and stars Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, and Michael Jai White. Judging by that title and cast I expect nothing less than instant classic.
