I'm wrestling with this and I would love to hear sound rationales for each movie.
Which is the better overall film and why?

Both have great storylines. I'd say it's a push in that regard.
However, PTA is a 1,000 times better technical filmmaker than QT. And because of that "BN" is a more beautiful film to look at.
That being said, I'd give the nod to "BN"
(In the interest of full disclosure, I must say that PTA is my favorite filmmaker.)

Pulp Fiction ...by a landslide

The edge goes to BN for me as well. There are just too many great things about that movie. It has it all. Sex, violence, acting, soundtrack, intriguing story, drama, etc.
Pulp Fiction has the dialogue and the acting and the violence and the drama. And a good soundtrack. The rise and fall story in BN is more appealing to me than the snapshot of a day in the characters' lives, which is really what PF is.

I think pulp fiction has a more unique style (as in how they go from vega's pov to bruce willis' point of view to bonnie situation etc) than boogie nights.
As for boogie nights (which i love the movie):
"feel feel feel feel"

Dialogue/Writing- Pulp Fiction
Scene shoots/Camera Editing- Boogie Nights
Lots of GREAT actors in Boogie Nights (Reynolds, Cheadle, Moore, and yes Wahlberg). Pulp Fiction is really made by the Travolta/Jackson duo. And to a lesser extent Bruce Willis and Harvey Keitel.
I'd have say that Boogie Nights is more artistic with the scene buildups, emotional drama, cathartic moments, and great acting by supporting actors like Don Cheadel, Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds.
Pulp Fiction is all about the amazing dialogue. It just doesn't get much better.
I'd give the edge to Pulp Fiction just because of that intangible factor that it "entertains" me more than Boogie Nights. Pulp Fiction I could watch every week. Boogie Nights requires to much of me too watch it over and over.

I've been around this block twice now. Looking for something. A clue. I've been looking for clues and something led me back here. Yeah. So here I am. It could have been me, the one who was at Ringo's place when the shite went down. Hey. I know how it is. I've been there. We've all done bad things. We've all had those guilty feelings in our heart. I'm going to take your brain out of your head and wash it and scrub it and make it clean. I don't know. But I'm going to have to settle this. First we're going to check the hole and see what we can find. We're going to get nice and wet, and you're going to spread your legs. Oh, that's good. So you know me. You know my reputation. Thirteen inches of tough load, I don't treat you gently. That's right. I'm Brock Landers. So I'm going to be nice. So I'm going to be nice. So I'm going to be nice, I'm going to ask you one more time. Where the frick is Ringo?

I think we all thought "Pulp Fiction" was amazing when it was first around...say its first few years.
After that, it didn't seem to hold the same appeal, so I have to go with "Boogie Nights".
And for the love of God, I hope no one says they prefer "Punch Drunk Love" over BN!!

Pulp Fiction. Boogie Nights was awesome, but it's kind of hard to compare the two.

Pulp fiction. I can watch it over and over. Boogie Nights, I can only watch certain parts over and over. But...hmmmmm.... Rollergirl....... hmmmmm. Rollergirl makes it closer than it should be.
