So if some of you are looking for binge watching options during this hard time, Bojack is a pretty solid. I noticed in a Netflix thread from last week it wasn’t exactly brought up as one of their best series, when I personally think overall it is their best show. It probably had one more season it could have gone on for, but I really think it ends on a perfect note.

Bojack is a difficult show to explain, but I’d say approach it as a drama first and comedy second. I’ll put it this way: with the possible exception of Free Churro, the 10 funniest episodes are not the 10 best episodes. But it’s still really funny, especially all the animal puns they repeatedly throw at you. But in these times of isolation and anxiety, I think it’s a really good show to help work out those feelings.

And as for my Top 10 episodes, this is where I’d rank them.

1. The View from Halfway Down (6x15)
2. Free Churro (5x06)
3. Time’s Arrow (4x11)
4. The Old Sugarman Place (4x02)
5. That’s Too Much, Man (3x11)
6. Stupid Piece of shite (4x06)
7. Fish Out of Water (3x04)
8. The Showstopper (5x11)
9. Escape from LA (2x11)
10. The Telescope (1x08)

Huge fan here. And this is an excellent list. I wish that they could have figured out a way to end it on The View From Halfway Down, but I understand why they didn't.

In spite of the eponymous character's dismal outlook (I just wanted to use pony here), I loved the sight gags, frequent alliteration, and subtle humor--including the hilarious examples of groupthink. Hollywoo.

As I said in another thread, maybe there is some esoteric mind-trick in this show that you have to have had a few bumps in your own road to really appreciate it.

I might take your list and go back and watch those episodes again.

I cannot stress this enough:
Don’t binge watch Bojack if you’re already big time depressed. That show is perfect at making you feel for Bojack and empathize with his plight, and then hate yourself for seeing the same self-destructive selfish tendencies

You will not be thinking that at the end of the show. The penultimate episode I think may save lives. There is one show/movie I’d book burn, and it’s 13 Reasons Why. That glorifies teen suicide and has led to an escalation in teens killing themselves. That is a disgusting show.

This show has the opposite message in the end: that you can’t go back on suicide and that you are worth something and have helped others grow just by existing. The show is more like “we hear that you’re suffering and we’re with you in our own ways, but suicide is absolutely never the answer”. If the show weren’t named after the main character, it very well could have been named “The View from Halfway Down”.

What’s a comparable show to it?

I absolutely love bojack, it's basically like the joke-writing of a 30 Rock/Arrested Development (tons of jokes per second, tons of jokes you miss and catch second/third time around), with the character development of a serious drama.

that being said, I cannot agree with this statement enough:

Don’t binge watch Bojack if you’re already big time depressed.

this show can get HEAVY at times.

i remember watching this show when it first came out thinking it was going to be funny and it ended up being incredibly depressing

a lot of funny moments though. I only made it to the third season before losing overall interest.

It’s incredibly funny, poignant, relatable, and the ending has a great message, but that ride is painful. I’m not going to lie, I almost didn’t make it.

I think the genius of this show doesn't reveal itself until the last 2 seasons. Wow.

I like this show. Its well written but unbelievably heavy, and ends pretty heavy.

I also feel like they could have gone into the opiode crisis a little more than just blaming BoJack for being a bad person.

for sure. all time, "moments/episodes which broke my bitch arse" list, off the cuff:

1: "stupid piece of shite" - number one with a bullet

2: "I see you" from the monologue episode

3: everything from, "Time's Arrow" - bojack's relationship with his mother is so fricked up and brutal.

4: "That's too much man" - when sarah lynn shows interest in becoming an architect. her mom says, "mommy didn't do what she did to that talent scout so that you could go to college"

5: the second to last episode of the series fricked your old pal HT713 UUUUUUUUUP

The poem at the end... I thought they just took that from some other poet and were using it to bring the point of the series home... nope, wrote it from scratch. I think they’ve been sitting on that poem since the start of the show.

Good post. Excellent show, just incredible attention to detail. It's worth pausing it at times to read the background writing. And I agree that it ended well.

I'm in the middle of my re-watch now, this might be my favorite: Fish Out of Water (3x04)
