If you love South Park, you'll want to listen to this one. Trey and Matt are refreshingly candid about their frustrations doing season 20, and about the show in general.

Bill Simmons Podcast With Matt and Trey

For example, they say:
- they didn't really figure out what they were doing until season 5
- season 8 was the best season
- they were basically miserable doing season 20 because of the corner they got painted into, and were less than excited about the quality of the episodes.
- they had to scrap their original post-election episode when Hillary lost, and they even called the comedy central brass to tell them they would have to go black that week. But then they went into the writer's room erased about 2/3's of what they had for the original episode, and came up with an entirely new episode in the span of about 12 hours.

I love their early stuff.

They're not the only ones who feel this way.

It was pretty obvious.

I feel like season 3 and 4 is where it starts to head in the right direction.

Some of my favorite episodes were in those seasons

Their fault for not having a back up plan and putting all their eggs in one basket. I'd watch Terrance and Phillip and Towelie episodes before ever watching last season again.

They didn't get painted into a corner. If they didn't do the 6 days to air shite and sat down and wrote original episodes instead of just playing off of current events they'd be happier with the product. And this is coming from a fan

Season 1 is still full of classic episodes, but I'd say about 2001-2007 were the heights of the series.

The first few seasons and last season were definitely the worst.

Last season was borderline unwatchable. It was really bad.

Mr hankey the Christmas poo is still the most iconic episode in my mind.

this, but season 19 was one of their best seasons. It just shows that sometimes a good idea works and sometimes it doesn't.

Did BS let them actually talk? Or did he yell over them with terrible sports analogies?

yeah, it was pretty solid. Only a few patriots add-ins.

He did manage to pat himself on the back several times.

Which is exactly what they admit to in the podcast

Lemme guess

"Oh that sounds a lot like when I was starting Grantland and I had a bunch of talented dudes and I was making the greatest sports website ever and I was just like "am I able to pull this off" and at the end I was able to do that"

Chinpokomon is in season 3 and I think that's their first great episode. But both season 3 and season 4 were spotty. There are some decidedly weak offerings mixed in there that you don't see starting with season 5.

I think seasons 1 and 2 are borderline unwatchable. People who think the first two seasons are really good are, in my humble estimation, just speaking purely from a place of nostalgia.

For me that doesn't apply because I didn't really start getting into it until season 3. And when I see episodes from those first two seasons I don't get a warm fuzzy member berry feeling. I just see vastly inferior episodes to what came later.

Ummmm, but that's what they do, and so they did. Solid argument, though.

So they should have had two episodes ready to go depending on who won?

Or you could just listen to it.
