Watch tv show- volume at 20 no problems
Watch a movie- volume at 60 to hear the words, the second the music starts the house shakes and I have to turn it down to 15, music ends turn it back up to 60 to hear

Why are movies so inconsistent with volume levels?

Fight Club is one of the worst on DVD.

Dialogue is quieter than shite so you turn the volume up and then the music blares and the screaming and yelling as they fight goes to rock concert levels...while you can barely hear the narration.

TV shows are mixed for shitty TV speakers. Movies are mixed for state-of-the-art audio equipment. It's annoying.

It's called Dynamic Range

When I watch a movie I expect whispers to be quiet and explosions to shake the fricking walls like they should.

So is this thread about listing pet peeves or movie audio levels?

We already had a thread about pet peeves last week so I assumed it was about audio levels.

I don't think that's the right answer. To be authentic an explosion would have shards of shrapnel and actually blow out your eardrums.

Just dialing the volume way down and then way up is a terrible substitute for creating real suspense or surprise.

Oh man you are dead on right about how hard it is to understand dialogue in mostly modern day movies. Just a lot of mumbling and with mouth/face away from camera makes it doubly hard. I constantly have to rewind and listen again, sometimes 3 or 4 times, and finally just turn on close captioning. I recently watched some older classics, such as Aftrican Queen, Lawrence of Arabia, Zulu, North by Northwest, etc. and all have very clean easy to understand dialogue.

I've run my viewing through a Yamaha AV receiver for awhile now, upgraded last year to a 4k 7.1 system.

With the right audio equipment, movies (and some shows) are a pleasure to watch. Some of the sci fi stuff has a low rumble underlying everything when on a ship, etc.

But yeah, if you drop back down to simple TV speakers, a lot of them sound like crap.

When someone trips and they forget how to stand back up.

I can’t stand it when the background music is louder than the dialogue.

On the actual 'movie peeve' issue, I always notice when they have the auto-rack feature with drawing a gun. As in, a bunch of guy draw or level their guns, and you get "clickety-clack" noises. This makes sense if you have an old SA revolver, and you're thumbing the hammer back (which is where it seems to come from), but it's still used now with lots of guns where you can't or just don't do this.

I guess it sounds cool and dramatic.

Computer whiz kids having access to all systems after a few minutes or seconds of tapping away on the keyboard. And then knowing exactly what to do to keep going once "they're in."

This is how my parents "smart" VCR recorder worked. It could skip commercials because they were on a different audio level.

ETA: RCA Commercial Advance VCR.
