Lonesome Dove if that counts

Impossible to name the "best western of all time" as evidenced by the movies listed so far.

The Good, the Bad and The Ugly
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Once Upon a Time in the West
All 3 are great.

These three for me as well. I'd go GBU, Once Upon a Time in the West, then Outlaw Josey Wales. But it's splitting hairs between them.

A movie that John Wayne hated so much he turned down being in a western with Eastwood and wrote him a later explaining how much he hated said film. The OP asked for BEST WESTERN all time. I mean, my favorite might be Fistful of Dollars which is where my sig quote comes from. But I can't call a spagetti western the greatest ever. If we are having that discussion I think you have to consider the John Ford westerns, especially the ones with John Wayne (the greatest western actor of all time) as frontrunners: The Searchers, MWSLV, My Darling Clementine, Stagecoach.. The Searchers is definitely recognized among most film critics as the GOAT. Others to consider: High Noon, Shane, Rio Bravo, The Wild Bunch and maybe a few others. All of those are greater than any western made post 1960s, IMHO.

Leone's Western films (Duck, You Sucker is pretty overlooked) and The Wild Bunch are my favorites.
Unforgiven and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid are great, too. Really too many to pick just one.

Young guns is another good one.

This question pops up every few weeks and the answer is always Lonesome Dove.

I stayed at one in Austin that was pretty sweet.

It doesn't get any better than this scene:
"That's MY steak, Valance." Priceless.
John Wayne and James Stewart

I can never decide between Liberty and The Searchers.
