On a western note... Somebody tell me about Jonah Hex.
A new western coming out soon starring Josh Brolin, John Malkovich and (hopefully not the downfall of the movie) Megan Fox. Based off a comic book I know nothing about. But the story looks pretty sweet.
Anybody read the comic?

Someone on here was actually close to production and apparently it was mired in problems.

I really enjoyed Serenity (not best in 20 years, but enjoyable).

Yes, I know it was a sci-fi, but it was really a space western.

For all of the discussion on Tombstone, I consider it a really fun, enjoyable movie, but I would never call it a great movie. It is a movie I watch almost every time it's on, but never have listed it in a best movie list.

I was gonna say Silverado until I realized it came out in 1985. Wow, I'm getting old quick.

Quigley Down Under is good movie

I remember enjoying this 20 years ago when I saw it, but my taste has changed so much since then. Perhaps it's time for a rewatch.

hmm. Western is my favorite genre. And they are few and far between nowadays. Was hoping this one might be good.

I had never seen this until it came on amc the other day. I thought it was laughably bad. Just never got into it and couldn't take it seriously.

Not within the past 20 years, but is definitely my favorite... Both the movie and the book.

Unforgiven was great, really enjoyed Open Range. Wasn't a big fan of Broken Trail. Tombstone is ok... and just that, IMO.

I like Silverado, but no one in that movie is getting any awards for acting.

Like with Quigley Down Under, it has been 20+ years since I saw it. As a teenager, I enjoyed it. If I watched it now, I would probably agree with your take. If I remember right, it actually got some nominations (no idea what category), so I guess the academy enjoyed something about it.

ETA: Just looked it up. Nominated for Best Original Score and Best Sound.

Unforgiven was great.
I also loved The Proposition.

Two westerns that I haven't got around to seeing yet, but have high expectations for are The Assassination of Jesse James and Appaloosa.

I liked both. If you're like most, you will either love or hate Assassination. There is no middle ground. I was closer to the "loved it" side.

Did anyone see the Ballad of Little Jo back in the mid-90's? I heard it was pretty good, but never got around to watching it.

Granted this was in west Texas but I don't think many consider it a true western.
