Depends if your looking for funny, serious, or whatever else with a sports movie. I'll go away from the usual sports movie listed and mention a sports movie many don't seem to know about.

Youngblood (Hockey movie from 1986)

Somebody Up There Likes Me. One of my favorites. Based on the bio of Rocky Graziano.
quote:

Rocky Graziano (Paul Newman) has a difficult childhood and is beaten by his father. He joins a street gang, and undergoes a long history of criminal activities. He is sent to prison, where he is rebellious to all authority figures. After his release, he is drafted by the U.S. Army, but runs away. Needing money, he becomes a boxer, and finds that he has natural talent and wins six fights in a row before the Army finds him and dishonorably discharges him. He serves a year in a United States Disciplinary Barracks, and resumes his career as a boxer as a result.

Didn't read the thread, but I know it had to have been said...but The Sandlot is the best sports movie of all time. And it's not close.

Hoosiers is second IMO.

But... as fantastic as it is... is The Sandlot really even a sports movie?

Baseball brought them together, but the crux of the movie is the kids vs. The Beast, not a baseball game. They spend more time trying to get the ball back than they do actually playing ball.

Loved Bull Durham and the first Major League. The original Bad News Bears was pretty good as well.

But to take this thread in a slightly different direction, one of my favorite movies with a sports subplot: Forget Paris

A great sports movie, masquerading as a chick flick.

On the other hand, Jerry Maguire was a crappy chick flick masquerading as a sports movie.

This is a tough one. I'll pick mine by sports.

Football - Friday Night Lights (HM The Replacements)
Baseball - Major League (HM 4 Days in October)
Hockey - Miracle on Ice
Bobsledding - Cool Runnings

Also, I don't think Cinderella Man gets enough due for being a fantastic movie. It's honestly crazy how many great boxing movies are out there.

Thank you. If you're gonna pull this shite ... then you might as well throw in "The Goonies" because it has BMX and Sloth jumps a rope.

Hoosiers is a bona-fide sports movie.

Rudy is a bona-fide sports movie.

And so on.

Hell ... Major League is more of a baseball movie than Sandlot. As is Bull Durham.

This is the best non-boxing sports movie

quote:

This Sporting Life is a 1963 British feature film based on a novel of the same name by David Storey which had won the 1960 Macmillan Fiction Award. It recounts the story of a rugby league footballer, Frank Machin, in Wakefield, a mining area of Yorkshire, whose romantic life is not as successful as his sporting life.

Forgot about this one - good call

SPOILER ALERT: Nice touch in it when Pele's character scores a goal for the prisoners with his famous bicycle kick - and the German commander played by Max von Sydow gives him a standing ovation.

Quite a cast. Sly was a bit out of his depth.
